hey,
i think i have one:confused:,my oldest boy picked up a Garter snake at a swap meet,he was told it was a Indo Garter, after a short period of time,he no longer wanted it,so I took it.yet I've seen a few pics here, and this one doesn't look close, with mine,it's main color is a dirty yellow, and has three stripes that appear to be a blackish/green,the two side stripes,go to the neck, then curve downward,it's abit jumpy, making it difficult to handle, and will only eat minnows

from the first pic i wouldn't have thought so, but from the other two I'd say yes - it's an "Indonesian garter"

I must agree with Rhea, the second and third pics are clearly of Xenochrophis vittatus(Striped Keelback or Indonesian Garter), I'm not sure what the snake in your picture is, Louise. Doubtless some other Xenochrophis species....possibly trianguligerus?

Haha! That's the trouble with "common" names, they vary from country to country. I think you got the right genus though!

Found it!!!!! It's Xenochrophis piscator melanzostus......kept looking at X.piscator and thinking that was it, but all of them are more or less "checkered", but melanzostus is striped and looks EXACTLY like what you've got. Follow this link to see some pics... www.repti.net/reptile_pictures/Xenochrophis+p... (http://www.repti.net/reptile_pictures/Xenochrophis+piscator+melanzostus)Not sure what language it's in, but the scientific name and pics are all there. Unfortunately I can't tell if the site has anything about care or such. I imagine they'd be cared for much the same way that X.vittatus is cared for.

that does look a lot more like it - great job, Roy
btw - you can change the language at that site - even to English (upper right)
thanks for finding that

hey,
thanks for the help, wouldn't consider him the best for beginners, doesn't bite ,but very difficult to handle, and ALL that it'll eat is fish and only a couple at a time,he may take two today, and will go atleast a week before he'll want/take more, his color a little brighter than this, but he was digging, and is alittle dusty.

I'd definitely get a stool sample checked out by a vet. A lot of the asian snakes that are imported often come in totally loaded with parasites.

LOL...thanks for seeing that....it was about 2AM when I found the site, didn't even see the english version of it, was so concentrated on the pic.:D

hey,
I've had the snake now,for a good 6 mos.+.their a guy selling these at the swap meets for $15.00 ,I'am sure it was wild caught, had mites and afew water blisters, treatment took care of the mites, and after a few sheds, the blisters where gone.I just wished it would eat a little more, then a couple of fish a week,it could use a little more weight on it.only thing i need to watch is the shedding, the eye caps refuse to come off on their own ,so after it's finished i need to put drops of warm water on eyes and a very good pair of tweezers, which I've got plenty of,I build WWII era armor in 1/35 scale.I've been working with snakes now,a good 35+ yrs.and wouldn't recommend one of these ,to a beginner
