Hi All

Just a couple of questions about breeding

From what age can a male checkered garter snake breed?

Can checkered garter snakes breed successfully without a cooling period?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

I've seen male garters actively court females at just over 12 months old.

Any garter can breed without brumation. Brumation just makes it more natural and helps to ready the snakes for the breeding process. Studies indicate ovum and sperm development is enhanced by brumation.

Thanks for the info

My male garter snake will be a year old around the end of this year ( summer as I live in the Southern Hemisphere)

So I will put him in with my female in summer and see what happens.

Will brumate next year if nothing happens.

I had checkerds and successfully bred them twice without much brumation, first year nothing second year I just turned lights and heat off so all they had was room temp.
As Steve said the males will breed around 12 months. But the females are better if bred at least 2 years or older.

Edit: I miss my checkerds, hopefully ill be able to catch some easterns this year.
