Pinky mice $18.00 (reg.$25) a hundred. That's .18 a piece.

It is a pretty good deal.
Just bought 1000 today, and no thats not a typo. A couple years ago American Rodent had small mice for .05$ (nickle) I ordered 9000, and still have a couple bags left in the freezer. I have a 5ft long chest freezer full of rodents, venison, and panfish in the garage. Good thing my wife is a very understanding/empathetic person. Not many people would put up with that.
Mice direct used to do 10cent pinkies every once in awhile but these rodent places are in high demand now and don't run the super sales like they used to.

I used to keep 800-1000 mice at at time, but at today's prices, I can only keep 4-500 at a time now.

Yes, of course they are! I say that because 10 days ago I bought a few hundred pinkies from Mice Direct.
Naturally their big sale would happen right AFTER I stocked up with a few months supply!

Isn't that the way it always is. I was going to buy some gas last night but decided to wait(hoping prices would drop) instead they jumped up .25 a gallon over night.

Holy cow! If I had the money right now and I hadn't just bought 200 pinks...I would definitely be ordering some from Mice Direct. Thanks for the Bump to this thread! I just bought 1000 small pinkies! I have the "Bill Me Later" feature thru Pay Pal. It is great to have in these cases when you want to take advantage of a great deal. No interest for 6 months on purchases over $99.00. I will have it paid off long before that. Total for me (including shipping) was around $177.00. I bought 100 small pinkies at the Reptile Expo in White Plains last month for around $30.00 and they are almost gone. This is a fantastic deal! Thanks again, Steve!

Exactly. I can never afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a thousand freaking mice in order to make the per-mouse price a good deal. I'm not running a warehouse snake room/breeding facility here. So I'm stuck with occasionally buying a few dozen from local breeders at a dollar each.

I think it's worth mentioning that Rodentpro also has a bunch of stuff on sale right now, including pinky rats for 25c. Very economical if your females will eat them; mine are getting 4/wk in preparation for brumation and then breeding.
Edit: also very economical for males and juveniles if you don't mind chopping them up. The skull and other bones are a bit too big for babies, imo.

But they aren't $9.50 for 100 small pinks Steve. it's $19 even with the sale. $4.75 per bag, 25 in a bag.
25 cents for pinky rats. Even if I order 200 of them (way more than I can use before they freezer burn) I pay more that twice that even with the sale.

What's your point about the rats? You have to pay shipping no matter what you buy or where you buy it from. I'd rather pay 25 cents for rat pinks, which average 5-6 grams, than pay 12 cents for mouse pinks which are 2g at best. I just play the numbers.

Don't be so sure about that.;) Why would I have to pay shipping if I don't need to have them shipped?
My point is when you list these prices it sounds fantastic. But add shipping and the fact that even if I order 200 of them it seems they intentionally make the box so freaking big, you're paying to deliver empty space. Now if they would only use smaller boxes at a lower rate... or simply go by weight on small orders I might not have to pay nearly $60 to deliver 200 in a box that is mostly empty. They have a minimum order then turn around and screw you over on the shipping if you do that and don't order hundreds of dollars worth. I know damn well if they shipped my 100 or 200 in a USPS flat rate express box or go by weight I could save quite a bit on shipping but nooooo...

How the heck did you manage that. I can't even get a quote on that site but I suspect with my location that price just isn't going to happen. Best I can seem do is around 200 pinky rats for a little over $100 delivered, or around 54 cents each. not sure if it was rodent pro or mice direct but one of those is right in your backyard.
I wonder if I can work something out with someone getting those prices and they could shoip some to me USPS express and I don't care about dry ice/keeping them frozen if they get delivered in 1 day. The snakes don't care and seem to refer them 1 day rancid.

I'd say because of his close location to micedirect, the shipping was considerably cheaper. I just ordered 1000 pinkies and spent $177.00 but I'm in Connecticut and my shipping was around $52.00. You, unfortunately, are on the other side of the country. :(

To be honest with you, there is a guy about an hour from me that goes to the White Plains show. I bought my pinkies there in the beginning of July; I think it was 100 pinks for $25-$30.00. I would still rather pay $52.00 in shipping and get 1000 to my door than drive over 2 hours and pay for gas. It was still cheaper for me in the long run.

They will keep up to a year I would think. Look online at Mice Direct, they usually have a weight and visual comparison on the website.
ConcinusMan

Mine keep about a month before I have to start cutting white parts off or throwing them away. I'm sure if they were vacuum sealed a few in a package (like use a foodsaver) they would keep longer. They just don't hold up well if air is touching them, and that includes air pockets inside a sealed package. In other words if you throw them in the freezer the way they come, with all the air and space in the bag, they won't keep long. They freezer burn about as fast a pork chop placed directly on the shelf without wrapping it.

You should have that freezer checked unless about a month is a year:D
ConcinusMan
10-04-2013, 10:41 PM
It is checked. It's not the forced air or chest kind. It's old school coil type. You know, the kind you have to manually defrost every so often (not so often for me since I only get into it about 3 or 4 times a month) It's an upright bigger than the kitchen fridge/freezer combined. The metal shelves are what absorbs heat. I keep only meat in it and temperature is about -6 F.
No meat keeps worth a damn if it isn't vacuum sealed to remove all air from the package. I don't care what kind of freezer it is. I don't put meat in the other smaller one because something as small as a pinky would thaw in it when it goes through that stupid self defrost cycle. So, in the big freezer at temps that low, pinkies freezer burn in no time. I would absolutely have to vacuum seal just a few in individual bags or they will freezer burn, and I do the same thing with my meat. Just try keeping anything good in a self defrosting freezer for 5+ years. But at -6 and vacuum sealed, it could be in there 10 years and comes out as fresh as it went in. I just can't put anything in there with air in the package. Especially pinkies.

Wow must be nice. I can't seem to get them for less than 75 cents each including shipping no matter how good the sale is and that's if I spend $300. But i gotta do something and bite the bullet because I now have 3 pyros and a thayers king to feed and also feeding 2 baby mussurana's (Clelia clelia) for the next month or so and they all need small pinkies not big enough yet for food much bigger than a large pinky except for maybe one of the Mt. kings. Local rodent supplies are dry except for large rat pinks at $1.00 each or small pinkies at petco priced over $5 for 3. Sucks for rodents where I am I sure wish these online suppliers could do better for people in the northwest but even when they have flat rate shipping sales it never applies when I go to checkout because of my zip code. I have to pay like $78 to ship one box of rodents. HELP ME!! The snakes are eating me into the poor house! lol :p

Wow, I can get 300 pinkies for $30. NOT. If I want them to be in transit less than 5 days and take 3-day shipping it will cost me $144. There has got to be a better option I am at my wits end and have had it with high priced rodents. It would probably be cheaper by weight for me to buy pure silver. Anyone have any brilliant ideas how I can fix this situation because the rodent suppliers haven't budged on this problem in the 5 years I've been checking and I need a lot of rodents soon. It's costing me about $10 a week to feed ONE snake and I have at least 4 snakes that need a constant supply.
I don't get it. I could ship 500 pinky mice with dry ice, overnight guaranteed, in a flat rate USPS express box for $40 to any state but the mice suppliers won't do it. I gotta pay for UPS 31.4 pounds, at $144.00 and it still takes 2-3 days in transit.

Since going to the reptile show where I picked up about 3 pounds of live pinky mice for 25 cents each, I found out the producer lives 5 minutes from me. No more supply problems, no need to order frozen because I can get them live, and no more paying 5 bucks for 3 of them. :D All my garters are on a diet of rodents now, with just the occasional bit of tilapia. I'm seeing less work cleaning tanks, spending less on substrate changes, less frequent feedings, and better growth rates.

I bought some frozen pinkies and during the time that my ribbon snake was eating alot I was able to sneak one to him but now he isnt eating anything at all barely(once again). He looks good and all (Kinda thick) but not eating anything aside from the two pieces after nearly a four to five day stretch of no food. I got back from a short 4 day trip and he ate a couple pieces of fish and thats all. I know that its not shedding time (just recently shed a week and a half or so ago). Some of the fish I've been getting hasnt been the freshest, sometimes I think the stores are selling fairly old fish. Today I picked up some and its definetly fresh but still wouldnt eat.
Is it common at all to get pinkies that are alive and feed with? Seems like the movement would attract.

Some local pet stores will have live pinkies.
I don't recommend doing it at all. Just try nightcrawlers, they are a favorite. You can also try scenting the frozen pinkies with nightcrawlers.
I personally don't think its right to feed snakes live mice.

Why do you differentiate live mice versus live nightcrawlers? What about other live prey like fish or tadpoles?

Is ther a certain type of minnow thats good to feed with? Before I found out about thiamenise my snake seemed to love to catch the minnows it seemed. Why not live pinkys is it too dangerous to digest? After thinking about it I dont think wanna feed with them (live pinkys) anyway. just curius

I believe there is a species of minnow that is safe(don't remember the species), the real problem is finding them commercially. They might be safe(no thiaminase) but could have a parasite load because of the conditions there are kept in. Then again, wild caught may also introduce parasites, pathogens and toxins. Most garters love to go fishing. They don't care about thiaminase, they just want to eat.
Live pinkies seems inhumane(no offense meant), with the availability of frozen I don't see any advantage to feeding live prey. Certainly not pinkies but live mice and rats injure many a snake before they die.
