Of the 87 or so (sub)species out there, can you experienced keepers make any generalisations in how different their behaviour is in captivity, e.g. t.s.sirtalis vs t.s.pickeringii ?

Making generalizations is relatively easy, but I'm skeptical about their predictive power.

Generalisations between species are difficult because there is also variation with individuals. I've made some broad generalisations in the past, eg... cyrtopsis are skittish and difficult eaters, radix are calm, infernalis are voracious and aggressive eaters. How much that holds up is subjective. The one does seem to hold is that radix are nice easy going snakes (but recently even Steve would have to admit that they aren't always the lovely, innocent snakes he knows and loves - referring to the cannibal radix).

Do you currently keep garters or just looking at getting some?

The only reliable trait you'll most likely see with Garters is that they are fascinating to watch,(especially if housed in large ,naturalistic vivs.)

I keep easterns. In my experience they tend to be really intense when food is involved, but very chill otherwise. idk, I've noticed a bigger difference between males/females than between species. Males tend to be more jumpy and definitely more energetic, while females tend to be more chill.

I asked the original question because yes, i am looking to get my first garter. You all already know they're awesome. It'll be very well cared for.

I should have realised that generalisations are always just that, and one keepers experiences will differ from the next, but I guess you just need something to go on, other than just the snakes' beautiful appearances.

I love t.cyrtopsis ocellatus, t.s.sirtalis [flame] and t.s.concinnus. So, I guess it's also gonna be about availability! The Radix too.

What would you do for your first garter, folks? :confused:
