My name is Angel, I'm looking into getting a garter, and wanted to look around. I currently have two corns, a RES, a bearded dragon, a chinese water dragon, and a cat. I want more snakes, but my boyfriend is not a fan of the larger species, so I was hoping to find some smaller species that he would be comfortable with. :)

Welcome to the forum Angel. Garters are awesome. Keep in mind garters and cats don't mix so care must be taken to protect the snakes. An escape proof home is very important.
Here is a link to the forum care sheet which is always a good read. Feel free to ask any additional question to the forum.
T.radix (plains garter snake) is a great snake and would do well as a first garter (first as in, there will be more):D

Thank you :D

My cat is really good with the reptiles, she grew up with them, but I always make sure they are in escape proof habitats.

Welcome to the best garter snake forum on planet earth! My cat once killed one of my ribbon snakes. She hasn't touched a snake since I introduced her to the water misting bottle. :D

Thanks!
Ruka (my cat) has never been aggressive to any of my reptiles. However, I'm not sure how she would do with a small snake, my corns are big enough that she knows they are not prey. So, better safe then sorry.

I think that is wise.;)

Hello and welcome!
Think about how small is small to you.
Radix, Easterner and checkered, among others can get over 30the inches long, easy.
Butlers and northwestern remain around 20 inches or less, and are far more slightly built. (Clothesline thickness, as opposed to garden hose diameter bodies.)
Ant the colors, all the lovely colors....

Small to me is less then 10ft, however my boyfriend considers my corns "large". My male corn is about 6ft, so I'm looking for snakes smaller or equal to that.
I work at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, and I've taken care of ribbon snakes, and many garter snakes, mostly wild ones we caught for a few weeks for camp and then let go, so I have some experience with them. I was drawn to them because of all the colors, not to mention they eat similar things to some of the animals I already have. Still trying to figure out exactly what I want, and where I will be able to find a seller here in Maine xD
And Thank you :)
