 i was in the woods by the creek (on a hot humid day) looking for some darn garters for an hour and a half. i flip over every rock i see and every log i see. i had even built a dam a while back (made of rocks...) and flipped all those over and found absolutely nothing. i am really p****d and have concluded that there are 0 garters where i live (mid ohio by akron)

Don't be discouraged! Keep looking. All the garters might have been sunning instead of hiding. If there's water, there's bound to be some sort of garter. Keep looking and try again some other time.

I promise you my place is worse lol. There is probablly 50 acres of woods, with probably 40 of those acres being a protected wetlands, right by a 30 acre lake and I never see any ribbon snakes ( I'm pretty sure there are no garters here.) Sometimes I'll see a copperhead or a coral snake but obviously I steer clear of them.

the beauty of the UK is that we have 6 species of reptile that aren't commonly seen. so to see them is a special experience. (i'll make a thread about it)
sorry to hear you found nothing. keep looking! you are bound to stumble accross something eventually.

We have 5 species, and I've only seen one of them this year. :(
I'm bored, so please forgive me for typing this crap:
On a scale from 1-5, 5 being very common and 1 being extremely rare:
5. Zootoca vivipara
4. Vipera berus
3. Natrix natrix
2. Anguis fragilis
1. Coronella austriaca
Many a day I've been out for 3 hours looking and found none, just keep at it you'll find one sooner or later!

Don't be discouraged Mike. When I went looking for Grass Snakes a couple of months ago, it was six hours before I saw one. It's a hot spot for this species so I knew they were there, and I'm usually pretty good at spotting them. Even so I was there all day to catch just one. You have to be patient (and lucky) sometimes.

yea well i placed some boxes out in the woods by the stream. i made sure they were different sizes so w/e size of snake wanders along (if one does wander along) it can choose the best to stay in. the plan is to wake up at 5 am and then go looking under the boxes and surrounding rocks at 6 am. then i have a fundraiser to go to and ill be back and ill look for ones sunbathing in the fields at around 1 or 2. sound good???

Sounds like a plan to me, Mike. Just keep trying. Oh, and take your camera...if you catch one we want to see it!

Went down to the lake and saw 6 garters and a milksnake in 1/2 hour, haven't seen one since. Gotta be there at the right time and be a little lucky.:D

WOW! You live about three hours from me.
Trust me, there are PLENTY of garters in the Akron area!
However, you will need rainy weather (It has been extremely dry in Ohio this past month), followed by hunting in the early AM hours, to find them, and it may take you several weeks before you find one, so don't give up! These guys are sneaky and wary of humans... especially near a big city like Akron... but trust me, they are there!
(I am near Columbus);)

well, I certainly hope you put all the logs and rocks back exactly as you found them, I promise you there are garters in your area but if you flip logs and rocks and dont put them back there wont be any garters for long.
Dont get discouraged there have been days where I would be out field herping for 7-8 hours with only seeing a fence lizard or two, some days are good some are bad, that's just the way it is, if reptiles were super easy to find there wouldnt be very many of them left in the wild

Yep... I have been in Wadsworth. I have an Aunt who ran "The Toy Cupboard", which was a small specialty toy store in Hudson. I have another Aunt and Cousin in Chagrin Falls. I also have a friend who lives in Mentor... and my sister sees a doctor in Akron.
I'm all over Ohio on business and to visit friends, etc.

i decided that there arent actually any reptiles here at all. i have lived here for almost four years and have never seen a snake, lizard, etc. i think that i'll just go to the pet store, and if they don't have any garters than maybe some of u have baby garters????

its ok if there aren't any garters around your place.
I don't think there are any around mine either! (i live in the city)
You can get one from a breeder!
