This male red T.radix is over 4 years old and looks like a first year snake.
He's a great little guy but not sure I'll use him for breeding.

Oh wow, whenever I have a snake that doesn't grow as fast as his relatives, I stop feeding pinkies, and start feeding rat pinkie parts. Rats are more nutritional than mice, which is why I always prefer to feed rat pups over adult mice anytime possible.

I wouldn't at all be bothered if a snake is lagging behind his siblings. Every individual grows at it's own pace and to rush it's growth seems wrong in my eyes. Perhaps this animal is genetically inclined to be smaller than other individuals in its species. For it to live in Steve's house means nutrition couldn't have been a possibility, right Steve? ;)
As usual, gorgeous radix!

I had one that did that too Steve. That one I used to call "mighty mouse". Meanest dang garter snake I've ever kept long term. At 2 years old he was about the size of a 4 month old. He ate well and seemed healthy but just wouldn't grow, and he hid under the substrate 100% of the time, would strike repeatedly and flatten himself at the slightest disturbance. Just a frantic little guy. I think I showed you the video. Then one day he just dropped dead out of the blue. He was one of two siblings that were the same size when I got them. At 2yrs, his sibling was 4 times his size at least.

What a pretty fellow!
(But then you know I like the smaller snakes.)
He'd fit right in, sizewise with my Butlerii boys- I wonder if it was small individuals like this that differentiated into t. Butlerii if the theory that butlers and radix are closely related is true.

I moved the runt male into the B/W paddock yesterday. I checked in on him today and noticed he had just started a shed. After 3 minutes in a cool shed box he left me two gifts. :D
He is a very handsome male.

Beautiful. I know photos usually don't do justice, so I can just imagine who bright he is in person.
