Beautiful! :) How do they compare to the native helvetica in behavior and care?

Those are the garter snakes of Europe. I bet that if they were naturally occurring in America, they would be in the genus Thamnophis.

Natrix actually lay eggs Greg. That's the main thing separating them from North American Natricines.
They really do look dramatically different from the other forms of this species! Almost thought I was looking at something else.

That, a few million years of evolution and about 25 000 -30 000 km.

There a lot easier than our helvetica. These seem shy, much like natrix Maura but seem to be getting bolder with age. :)

No problems as yet. I have a tiny one that is a great feeder. Helvetica are more specialist amphibian eaters than the other sub species.

Thanks for the info Steve. :)
The problem they have is the Greeks attitude towards conservation. They are just not interested . It's all about building hotels ect. I do not know what is been done to protect these if anything is been done at all.

A couple of the newest addition to the group. Only a few months old but she is a great feeder.

Awesome. Your are probably only a handful(no pun intended) with these snakes who are the verge of extinction.
Best of luck with them.

Its real sad when you think of it. Makes if shameful to be human sometimes. Who knows maybe the future could depend on the breeders that have them now.

Here's a link to some real interesting information about your rare snake John.
My friend Steve Schmidt found the info. and made me aware of it.
