I haven't heard if anyone catching garters with a trap... All my garters were caught half on accident. Don't be too conscious about it. During the summer, you'll eventually see one you can catch. Just remember to try not to sneak up on it. They're too fast and can sense vibrations. Since you probably won't have anything on hand when you see the snake (it never seems like you do!) just try to grab it with your bare hands. Garters rarely bite; they're more afraid of you than you to them! They only musk... But, anyway, happy garter hunting!

Many garters I've caught try to bite, go bike riding alongside a creek area and flip rocks/logs looking for them is what I do. If you see one on the path spring for it and try to get it into a striking position/mood if you can. They won't run at this point (from what I've seen) and you can gather your thoughts and move about until your comfortable to actually catch the snake, use a stick to proke at it and it should start to slither away, then gently pick it up. Never had problems with this method, sneaking up is hard so I wouldn't bother.

Really? I've never had any try to bite me! What species have tried to bite you?

There are some trap ideas here. The reptile tube trap looks intriguing. Good luck.:D

meh better late then never I guess sorry for being so slow to reply?
T. e. vagrans of all sizes bite like none other, I guess babies bite then run away. Although I've never actually been bitten... As a kid in Iowa either t.e.vagrans or radix or easterns, whatever I would catch would bite frequently. I remember one that curled up in a corner and struck at me many many times. Take in mind this was a large adult female who was not looking to be captured, one of only 2 garters to ever get away from me as a kid:)
