The pattern doesn't make me think of any nerodia, but the little faces do look similar. But I also don't know much about snakes besides garters(and I'm still learning about them too!).

You can see it more in the adults.

Your right almost identical . Similar evolution even though thousands of miles apart!

Isn't Natrix just like the European version of Nerodia?

It's a bit hard to compare. Natrix tessellata and Natrix maura have some similarities to Nerodia, such as the aquatic lifestyle and subsequently the diet (but definitely not the temperament), but Natrix natrix is pretty much the European equivalent to Thamnophis sirtalis.

Are the similaries due to parralel evolution or common ancestors?

I think you mean convergent evolution or common ancestors. The answer is both, depending on what characteristic you're thinking of. The coloration and head shape would be examples of convergent evolution, but common ancestry explains most of the features they have in common.

I want to correct myself here. It should really be considered Eurasian, not European. N. maura and N. tessellata are not European, either. They're also found in Africa and Asia, respectively.
