Happy Independence Day!
Do you guys light up fireworks to celebrate? Also from whom did you guys get your independence from, the Brits?

Do you guys light up fireworks to celebrate?
Nope. There's usually a military parade and later people watch the Presidential Independence Day reception on tv. And there's a war movie they show every year, at least nowadays.
Oh and some people leave candles on the graves of veterans and soldiers.
Also from whom did you guys get your independence from, the Brits?
Russia. They had a bit of a revolution over there back in 1917, and afterwards declared the right to secede, which we exercised. From 1809 to 1917, this had been a part of Russia, with a varying degree of autonomy. And before that, we were a part of Sweden for about 600 years.
The Brits (Royal Marines) did try to invade once, but a couple of peasants with hunting rifles and some Russian soldiers (IIRC) drove them off and captured a landing craft. ;)
Actually, that was just one incident during the Crimean War. They did do a bit more fighting around here, than that.

So I've heard. I think what we learned about the US was one test's worth, covering the major points of your history, starting at Columbus and ending with WWII. It included how your political system works. And in geography, we of course had to learn the states, some major cities, mountain ranges, major lakes and rivers. Same thing with North and South America, Europe (in much greater detail), Asia, Africa and Australia.

We only gloss over events OUTSIDE our country? My highschool classes just glossed over events in general.

So true. It's very interesting to see American history as taught to the Japanese. I contend that neither country teaches the truth. The truth probably lies somewhere in between the two versions.

On American in history we went over the civil rights movement (and lack of before it) and also the VietNam war. From what I gathered from the lessons America was messed up ;)
