How do you mean? What to do with the corpse?

Personal choice, I guess...bury it, incinerate it or flush it down the loo. It's up to you.

Ok, I am a little weird when it comes to this matter, but all my pets are buried in my parents’ backyard. The whole family comes out to support me when I bury them. They might think I am a little weird, but they all show up.

I wrap it up in plastic bags and put it in the bin. But it's been a while since I had a snake die....I might do different next time.

we have a ferret 3 hermit crabs 2 goldfish and a betta in my flower bed. We find an approprate box and dig a hole and sing amazing grace. My oldest picked the song. our services have been as small as just the 4 of us to half the neighborhood gathered around and Grandma on the phone.

Haven't had a pet die in a while thank goodness, but when I was little our old duplex had a trio of kittens (sad story, one from the SPCA had an illness and passed it to our two others), a few snakes, and a couple fish. They all had individual graves with markers and a nice little garden around them. I was really sad when we moved and had to leave them...

In the summer, I just dig a hole and throw it in. In the winter, my pets have usually been stuffed in a plastic bag, placed in a box and then thrown in the bin.
Haven't lost any snakes yet.

Moving and leaving them behind is why I cremate most of my pets. But for snakes, I have this prairie - about a half acre of prairie plants that we encourage - and I bury them there. I think it is an area they would like.

Mostly I put them in the freezer.
I do not know why, because most of the time I do nothing with them.

my ideal is burial, but I lack opportunity
we still have the ashes of a cat that died in '99 in a box, meaning to bury them someplace or at least toss them in the wind some nice place
with that in mind, smaller animals have ended up in the bin after after a few weeks in the freezer
once we move things may change

Why do you guys freeze them?

It's probably to be able to do a dissection afterwards. That way you might still learn something about the animal or the death of the animal.

i used to boil them to remove all flesh etc so that i could keep the skulls. my wife made me get rid of them all though so now my garden is 1 big pet cemetary.

every one has there own way to handle a passing , what ever is good for you .. I think it is kinda harsh just to put them in the trash, after all they brought us so much pleasure. a nice hole in the woods seems a very fitting spot to have a peaceful rest..
bye
and so sorry
for your loss.

About 30 years ago I had an aquarium and all the fish died except for one albino cat. It lived for another 5 years. When it died I dried it and put it in a little box lined with cotton. It’s still around here someplace………… That's not such a weird question, some of the answers, well.......... maybe :D.

Thought we could revisit this thread.
I bury my animal friends in my yard. If it is impossible to bury (like winter) I have had a frozen snake in my freezer for awhile. (Kinda worried about it when I went into labor this spring and had someone watching my kids for a day or so, found out they went into the freezer to make orange juice. Wonder if they saw my snake:eek:)

I have mine in the freezer during Winter and have a Service in the Spring for them.
I have a separate refridge/freezer for all my snake stuff(kid's orders)

I have the last two carcasses in the freezer. One's been there since December 2008. A third snake was sent for a necropsy and was presumably cremated.
edit: I just checked. Both putting it in the bin and burying it in the back yard is prohibited without special permission. I bet if I cooked it first, I'd be allowed to put it the bin.

We have a city law that prohibits burying animals in yards. It's one of those never enforced laws.

I'm lucky enough to own 5 acres of woods and farmland. All my animals are buried somewhere on the property. I have a wooded hilltop that we use as a campsite so my Borzoi dog and my cremated whippet are up there together. We've lost 3 horse since we moved here, 2 from old age and 1 from a horrible accident and they're buried in the paddock. ( At least you won't have to call the neighbor with the backhoe for the snake! )
When I die, I want to be cremated so that I can be sprinkled on the property I love with the animals I shared my life with. ( I wouldn't mind being buried here but you can't do that anymore! I really have a problem with being buried next to a bunch of strangers! )

I bury mine.
Learned not to trust the kids to do it, they put them so shallow that I find it dug up and gone the next day.

Kinda like making a local garter snake a pet around here, (never enforced) but yeah, just about every city has that law about burying pets. I don't think they are going to have a fit over a snake buried in your yard when snakes die on the surface every day.
I think the law is there to give them ammo when it gets out of hand such as burying a horse or large dog 3 feet deep, or turning your yard into a pet graveyard:cool: The city limit area here isn't all that large of an area. Go just outside of that city limit into county jurisdiction, and it's still legal to bury your human loved one's on your own property! (conditions apply of course)

There are laws here about burying large animals. They do have to be buried deep and far from any well or water supply. Adds a whole new perspective to the situation when you have to bury a large animal! Snakes are easy when compared to that!

while we're on the weird question thread . . .
any idea how long it takes for critters turn into skeletal remains when buried?

Depends on a lot of factors. Temperature, insects and microorganisms present, etc, but I did bury a pretty big garter when I was a kid. Dad tilled the area about 5 months later. There was nothing but bones left.

They have to be dead first though, or you would get into a lot of trouble with the law!

Preferably by natural causes or accident.
No, what I mean is, the exact location has to be registered on record, clearly marked, and it must be fenced. An elementary school (1st-6th grade) recently acquired some property and went to turn it into a soccer field and discovered a family plot on the property.(buried in the 1880's during a smallpox outbreak) It was not marked. They want to avoid that in the future obviously. Anyway, the family was identified, stones were erected and it was fenced off. There's now a little graveyard on this school's property!
It is unclear as to whether or not they buried any pet garter snakes on the plot.:p

^^ That happened to a relative of mine, found a couple buried on an old property they bought. Turned it into a very fertile garden plot :p Not really, they actually had the remains moved to a local cemetery. But their kids do have fun scaring each other with ghost stories.

no I didn't mean the piranhas
weird as it seems, I've been considering digging up our beardie who died a couple of years ago. I think it would be cool to have his skeleton. I'm worried though as to what kind of mess I would find

I don't think there would be much of a mess after a couple years.
Was he buried in some kind of container that will keep the soil away from the body?
