From the looks of the "Who's Online" over the last couple of days I know our Mods. have been very busy keeping the spammer off the site. I know little about what they do but I'm certain it's a lot more then we all realize.
Thank you Mods. for all you do.

I used to be on a great frog forum; probably the best one I'd found, but I had to stop getting on it because of all the spam. You couldn't read the actual posts without also seeing five others that were pornographic. I went back to it a couple months later and it had actually shut down because of this. idk what they do either, but I'm glad that's never happened here.

I second Steve's sentiment. As a mod elsewhere I fully understand how it's a thankless position, the best ones usually go unnoticed.

I don't remember if it's the same here but a good way to combat spammers we've used elsewhere is to have all new accounts need to be approved by a mod or admin. A minor inconvenience but can save everyone countless hours of work. It's usually pretty easy to tell who the spammers are by the account info. Just a thought.

I second these sentiments. I knows there's plenty of times that I'm sitting here being bored and nosey, and check out the "Welcome to our newest member" area on the bottom of the forum home page, and looking at the profile it's obvious its just some kind of advertisement/spam....

Thank you guys for keeping the forum clean:)

That is done here also. I'm glad they can't post their crap on here before it is found/noticed.

Speaking of new members, here's one online right now working on their profile. Hasn't made any posts yet. View Profile: arrackiva - Garter Snake Forum (http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/members/arrackiva.html)

And another View Profile: czgafatol - Garter Snake Forum (http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/members/czgafatol.html)

Judging from the ICQ I.D.'s given for these two, (among other things) I think they're spammers.

They have been aiming almost exclusively at General Talk, so this is pretty much it. Minus the couple of deleted threads on page 3 and the 20 or so I physically deleted before choosing the marginally quicker soft deletion. Plenty of time to clean up when the holes are plugged.

ConcinusMan

"soft" deletion?

BTW: more spammers incoming (registering/editing profile, etc.) too I see from "who's online" Jeez, I guess they don't give up easily do they?

Stefan-A

"soft" deletion?
The thread disappears from the view of the common folk, but can be revisited and restored by moderators, if necessary. We can do the same thing with posts, by the way.

Boy these spammers have been coming on in full force the past couple of days, maybe we should nominate a member to become a new moderator (with Boots' blessing) to help you guys out?

I don't think it's necessary, it's well under control. As for nominating a new member, sure, as long as I get to veto the result. ;)

it does distract from everything else.

It has been affecting all forums lately. I know of one that shut down all registration of new accounts.

I've seen an increase in junk in my email as well as stuff that slips past into my inbox... It's crazy... and now most of the spam has 'emotes' in the subject line... It's very annoying.

Keep up the good work mods!

What baffles me the most is how anyone would think that advertising ugg boots or online pharmacy deals over a reptile forum is going to be effective???

As funny n true as that is I think its mostly random generated junk. Don't know if people actually sit don n place single ads here n there... I'm sure they got bots to make most of it then it pauses at the "type the characters you see in the box" and maybe just a person goes n fills those in n then its back up to a bot?

Thats my thought.

It's a software script, writing accounts faster than we can delete them.

I have seen a slew of new registration names that look like this "abcdef123" "jklmno4401"

Since the user names are generated patterns, it tells us that there is a registration script that automatically fills in the new user form, and does it in a few seconds.

Man, that is messed up:p I mean, does this ever actually work out for them? Like do they really make money some how with all those kind of advertisements? Do people really fall for those ads?
