Hi Justin, I'm afraid I can't even see a snake in the photo, let alone identify! You could post a photo straight into the thread by following these instructions...

Welcome aboard, Justin. :) I'm afraid you're going to have to post a better picture.

What species are there in Pennsylvania? Sirtalis, brachystoma and sauritus? Sauritus has a pretty distinctive look (compared to the other two) and should be easy to rule out.

Yeah, that's right Stefan. This link might help people who are a little unsure about Garter Snake distribution...

snakefinder (http://www.gartersnake.de/snakefinder/snakefinder.html)

Chances are it will be T. s. sirtalis, but a decent photo would confirm that. Oh, I found the snake in the pic now, I just needed my specs on!

Justin, Your first few posts go into a queue for 'moderation' before they appear on the open forum (hence the delay). The photo upload button will appear once you have posted about 4 times....it's just a precaution to prevent spammers from posting porn etc.

ok thanks as soon as i'm able I'll post pics then.......
I think I found a pic on here that looks a lot alike the snake
i'm talking about, it said it was a stonyloam I think.....I live
in NW, Pennsylvannia about 2 hours from Ohio so maybe you could tell me if there in this part of the state.....I'm very new to this, I once had a
RedTail Boa and a Royal Python, but sadly had to get rid of them years ago..........thanks,

Stonyloam is Terry! One of our members!:D Most of Stonyloams snakes are Maritime Garters Thamnophis sirtalis pallidulus. I think it most likely you have an Eastern Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis.

True, but the scientific names are the same all over the world. Just chose your snake's latin name.:)

yes, it does look like a maritime, however, the range for maritimes doesn't extend to pennsylvania (according to Rossman, Garter snakes: Evolution and Ecology). Easterns do have quite a variable pattern and color!!1

Maybe the snake forgot to read Rossman!:D

Seriously, I have found species of animals where they are not supposed to live... and PA is not far from NY, depending on what part of the state...

I think that while Rossmans work is by far the best English language treatise on Garter Snakes, we must remember he hasn't been in every back yard in the US. An accurate picture of Garter distribution is best derived from the findings of people like us (well, like you, because I'm on the wrong continent!)

LOL!

Well, THIS summer it would be my two neighbors, since I still have not seen a garter that they have not brought to me!:(

Hello I'm writing to update you all on my snake thats under my porch...
I haven't seen the snake for about a week now, however today I see a
snake that looks a lot like the other, but much smaller...I got it with a worm tied to a string he/she seemed very hungry....anyway there is pics
in my gallery I couldn't figure out how to post them.......so now maybe we
can figure out exactly what type of garter this is?

P.S. the snake is about 12" in length, but looks very healthy so I'm sure its a juvenile but is it possible that the other snake had babies and this is one?

07-03-2007, 08:41 PM
yes that is the snake I caught today.....and that is basically the same pattern of one I first was trying to identify here weeks ago....but I haven't seen it in a week or so and still have not...but then this one shows from
the same exact place under the porch and I was able to catch him/her?
my other question was, can this be one of its offspring...the one I caught
is about 12 inches long and is smaller of course than it looks in the pics....

Sid

If this young one is already 12" in length, it would hve been born last summer. T. s sirtalis are only around 6" long at birth and normally born late June to August.

I am new and don't know a whole lot about garters,do they stay in the same area of birth or what....I mean I seen no other snake under my porch, just the adult sized one that I put on here in the first place...
and now I get this one after a while of not seeing the other from the same exact place......

Take a pic of "her" underside, so we can see where the vent is in relationship to the tail...

We might be able to sex "her"...:D

I think we came to the conclusion that even though it does kinda have the
meritime look, it is in fact an Eastern Garter........
