So I'm pulling an intake off a Saturn today at work and happen to see this little guy cruising across the floor.

How long should I wait before I should start getting concerned.

Considering the little one was probably looking for a brumation spot I wouldn't be surprised if it refuses food for awhile.
Do you think you could still find some slugs in your area? I've found them still alive and active when the air temps had been freezing for a few days.
Not eating and getting folds in its sides is a clear sign of trouble.
I would start offering worm chunks or slugs as soon as possible.
Keep us posted about the wee one.

Slugs and small worms are still plentiful here thanks to the large pile of straw I have in the back yard. I'm wandering if he had been hibernating in the shop and turning the heaters on drew him out.

Your temperatures have been getting pretty darn cold at night and snakes would have to seek a place above freezing at night. But your daytime temps are still high enough for that particular species to be active and moving about. But I would say it's entirely possible he was just hanging out there for the winter and took advantage of the warmth to get out and look for food and/or water and that's when you found him.

Remember, brown snakes don't like heat so if you're keeping him, room temp is more than adequate. They are the first snake out in the spring, last one to go inactive in the fall/winter. Often seen active outside, out and about, when its only the 50's.

Thanks for the info. I have him in the critter cage I was using to put the other two snakes in when I clean out their terrarium. I won't worry about getting a heat lamp since room temp is adequate.

Be careful if it's a cage with a lid like this:

I've heard of people having small babies slip through the slats.

Hmmmmm.........didn't think of that. Suppose it's back to the pet store tomorrow.

I think also people have put panty hose or something like that on top to cover the slats but the air can still get through. I'll try and see if I can find a thread with the info.

Yea snake getting out would be bad. Roommates girlfriend would kill me and my roommate. She has no idea I have them.

Sometimes the problem isn't getting out. The problem is getting stuck.

I was thinking of that, just wasn't sure. Thanks for putting that out there.

^This thread has a little more info, and first hand account of escape, on the second page. And a possible death from getting stuck...:(

And it tried to escape from a hole like this:

Pulled gently from above, pushed gently from below and wiggled the snake side to side, basically getting one rib free at a time. No harm done whatsoever. Not a single lost or ruffled scale, no broken ribs and no lost appetite. Had the snake been half a millimeter thinner, it would have gotten through and had it been half a millimeter thicker, it would have lost at the very least some scales.

Good save. Was it hot glue time for those holes or the trash can for the unit?:D

I don't trust glue.

Wow, that snake doesn't even look as small as this dekayi. Glad you got it free, unscathed.
