Hello, it is winter here in the Great White North and the air is very dry. I have to make a moist hide for my garters and was wondering what I need to do. Any advice on how to do it myself and what to use would be great. Pictures wouldn't hurt either and items needed. Thanks

Are offering a dry hide in addition to the wet one?

Plastic box with a lid + moss, peat moss, paper towels, vermiculite or any other suitable substrate + water. Cut or melt a hole with a diameter of twice the snake's thickness in the lid or the side of the box. Add the substrate and enough water to make it moist all the way through.

Make sure to keep on top of whatever substrate you're using in it. My snakes love to poop in their moist hides.

Only one of my snakes have ever done that, namely my idiot tetrataenia. All my other garters, plus the viperine snakes crap elsewhere, without exception.

Well you're a very lucky man! Every one of my sirtalis and parietalis love to use the moist hide as a bathroom.

I use sphagnum moss in a plastic dish- they seem to prefer dark hides so painting or covering with fabric or leaves as shown who've is a great idea.
I rinse the moss about once a week, change it if it needs it.

Yea I use Sphagnum moss as well, it is great stuff. Lasts long, snakes like it, it's got all sorts of anti-fungal properties so it really don't mold.

I feel your pain, freezing cold temps mixed with soooo dry air. We must be on similiar latitude lol. I use a twofold approach. Household humidifier in the snake room - Tupperware humid hides with the sphagnum moss inside the enclosure. Perfect sheds :-)
