My two new buddies. These are the first garter snakes I have ever purchaced. In fact, these are the first reptiles I have ever purchaced. All my scaly pets have always been wild caught.

I'm not 100% sure on genders yet, and so the names may be subject to change ;) They slam down worms like there's no tomorrow. They appear to glow neon in their tank and their colors simply aren't shown in full by the camera. One is more normal, but still has blue undertones. The other has obvious blue coloration. Again, the true extent of the colors are not shown well by the camera.

Beautious friends you got there, congrats. :) Also I think the names would be fine either sex, they seem unisex to me. ;)

I will have some butt photos up soon :) Skye has gone blue phase (haha... I mean blue-er phase lol) and is getting ready to shed. I will post up more photos after s/he sheds.

These guys are so different than my vagrans. A little bit more shy, yet they sleep out in the open rather than in hides. Their scales feel smoother, and the expressions on their faces are more serious and thoughtful looking, whereas the vagrans faces look fierce and angry to me (not in a bad way). I love the fact that they are so different from eachother :)

Awaiting the butt photos! I think thats what makes garters so addictive. They're all different!

I wish I could get snakes like that.;)

It's those vagrans "eyebrows" that does it. My experience is with WC vagrans are WA state snakes and all of the ones I've encountered had the attitude to match the look.

I'm betting this one is female:

I think you are right Richard, I believe Echo is female.

Her colors really play tricks with my eyes. In photos she always comes out as above- yellow, red, black. In person, her colors seem to change. Her underside is very blue, and her stripe seems to change colors... from yellow to a very greenish blue.

I can tell them apart easily because Skye has a doubble row of more rounded spots along the sides.

The wild vagrans around here can show a bit of an angry side at first, but they calm down quickly. I have never been hit by one. The ones I have as pets are total pushovers :)

Well, I wasn't all that interested in vagrans. Never have been, so I didn't keep any beyond a couple of months but they never did calm down. They were always doing a viper impression and striking. Sometimes, when I just walk by the tank.

Possibly behavior varries from location to location... The local population here also seems far more social than what I've typically herd about vagrans. I usually find them in groups or pairs throughout the year.

They can certainly look intimidating when they flatten out their heads and coil to strike!

Well, Skye shed today so I got out my camera for a little photo shoot. Got the butt pictures! They were not at all happy about it. Echo I am going to say is female. Skye I am going to say is possibly a male. When compared side by side, Echo's tail narrows obviously, where Skye's stays the same. I'm guessing it will become easier to tell one way or another as "he" grows more mature. What do you guys think?

They are still pretty young/small and things could change for sure. I say female on both for now.

It is tough to call. That's why I told people I would make an attempt if requested, but no guarantees. Very hard to tell until they get more size on them. Still, I'm thinking Skye = female, Echo = male.

Nice photos.:)

Not much to update, but I pretty much keep my camera beside the tank so... :D I end up with quite a few photos. I love taking pictures of these guys.

Here's their tank, the substrate is Reptibark. The water dish is a ceramic dog bowl that sits on the bottom of the tank (there is no possible way they can get under it). They don't really like hiding, but they can go under both pieces of driftwood if they want to. The 3-d foam background is on the outside of the tank.

Skye is the less active of the two, so when she decided to cruise around I started clicking away, lol. I almost wanted to name her Rainbow, I think you can really see why from this shot.

SKYE & ECHO :) They posed in almost exactly the same spot. Believe it or not, Echo also has quite a bit of blue tint. I find it so odd that is dose not show up in photos.
