View Full Version : Hello everyone!
I have a young garter snake (approximately 8-9 inches long) named Buck (after an adventurous weasel in Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs). He's beautifully colored in bold black, bright yellow, and striking red. I've had him for five days and he's eaten one small fish so far. I look forward to being part of your community.

He ate a small feeder guppy. Here's a picture of him!

(http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r515/Headfirst_For_Halos/IMG_2578_zps3e713a31.jpg)Also, is it important for a garter snake to be housed with a cagemate, or will they be happy on their own?

First. Welcome aboard, from a sunny Coventry.
Second. Pretty snake. Looks like a T. s. parietalis, with some good red sides?
Finally. They are happy on their own, but a lot of us find that they are more relaxed when housed with other similar garters.

Good looking scrub. I think garters feel more secure with a cage mate or 2 or 3.:D

Looks more like a fitchi, seeing he's in Vancouver..
He'd be just fine alone, but they do like company.

Welcome to the forum!
Thank you guys! I'll try to get him a buddy soon. I do believe, from looking at pictures and the area, that he is a fitchi (Valley Garter Snake). Would it be fine to buy one of the ribbon snakes from the store, or do different species of garters not get along? Sorry, I'm not quite as knowledgeable as most of you XD

I have a T. radix, a T. s. parietalis, and a T. e. cuitzeoensis in one viv - they get on fine, in fact the Cuitzeo has become more confident since she started sharing with the other two girls (the radix and parietalis were both outgoing snakes already).
I don't know about fitchi and a ribbon as I don't keep either, some of the others will have some ideas.

If you where to mix species you have to be 100% sure they are all the same sex as hybrids aren't a good thing.
Steve keeps his Shyblue with a group of radix girls so there shouldn't be a problem having ribbons with garters.

I have had a concinnus, parietalis, Marcianus, and a sirtalis all in the same tank before, there's no concern mixing species as long as they're positively THE SAME SEX, and not a huge size difference.
But don't feel like you have to put a second snake in there -- you don't.
I have some more pictures of Buck that I'd like to post, and I'm not sure if I should start a new thread or not, but here they are!

Nice. Nothing wrong with Buck having his own thread or just a thread comprised of your snakes.

The latter was a rule at some point. And still preferable.
