Probably more uncomfortable then lonely. I think garters like company. Any chance you can post a photo of you checkered?

Sweet looking Checkered (T.marcianus). Sid looks good. How sure are you that you have a male there?

Definitely make sure you know the sex before throwing another snake in there.

As for your original question -- If the snake is smaller but mature, like still has a strong build, the size won't matter too much. Biggest concern for me is them getting crushed under the larger snake, and larger risk during feeding accidents. If the size isn't that significant though, you shouldn't have a problem putting a smaller snake in there.

But again, make sure they're both males. Post a picture of his tail/vent and we can help you with that

Agreed i think they feel a lot more secure with a second snake in there. Mine do at least

I have a similar question. I have a single baby that is only 7 inches long. She/he isn't eating very well and the next size snake I have is 17 inches. That snake is a slender wandering garter so it isn't a tank like my Radixes. I was thinking of putting the two of them together to keep each other company. I think both RedSidedSPR and I would love any rule of thumb you have. Thanks.

Wandering garters are known to eat other snakes, I wouldn't advise keeping them together especially with that size difference.

The little guy would either get crushed or eating most likely :p

Maybe not eaten, but it is a wandering. Canabals, you see.

There was a point in time where my 5 year old red sided lived alone for a couple months, he was always hiding, never ate as much, seemed like the snake was depressed. I put slider back in there after he healed from my damn cat, and in no time Spot was back to his old self, always wandering around, fiercely eating, seemed like a happy snake again.

I definitely think they have less stress when they are housed with a buddy.

I'm tellin ya.. Most of my snakes starte out alone. I add another and they go from skittish to bold in like an hour. They're much more secure and comfortable with other snakes. I just put one in with my first snake (WC) who's been alone for 3 years, always been really jumpy and insecure. And now, a week later, he's twice as chill around me, and doesn't freak out when I touch him, open the cage, wave my hand above him.. There's no denying the advantages to a "buddy".

I don't, but it's a good idea, eliminates the risks.

Any chance you can post another photo. That one is a little turned to the side. It needs to be straight on to the bottom of the tail area.
Thanks.

Ok, garters are less jumpy when they have a buddy, but How do you "introduce" each other? You just put them both in the tank or there is a "metod" ?(like the cats)

I just put the new snake in. In all my years I've never had a problem.

I put them in together and pay close attention to them for the next couple of days to make sure there isn't any shenanigans going on.

Juts make sure they are relatively the same size.

and the same sex, unless breeding is what you want.

Just toss 'em in there. They'll likely be curious and check each other out but it's not like they're gonna fight or anything.

I agree with the others...I just think garters do better when housed with a buddy. I always try to put one in with another when possible. But with a wandering, I would not put another one in with him. As far as size difference goes, I try to put together snakes that are relatively the same size...if I think one snake could look at another and think "That looks like a yummy worm"...I don't put them together. Lol. When putting snakes together, I put them together and then keep an eye on them for a couple of hours...to make sure they are getting along okay.

I thought that keeping snakes in the same enclosure was more dificult. Those snakes are very beauty, the colors almost "bright in the dark" :)

Yeah, Wendell and Zack are 2011s, but poor little Hodgins is a 2012. The big guys eat worms bigger than him! I gotta feed him more often, to put some meat on his bones!
