I'm starting a thread for my garters! The other personal garter threads are so much fun, so hopefully I can stay up on this one. I have three red sided garters...Molly, Snoop, and Roger.

Molly is my 09 female and my favorite. She LOVES food and would probably die before she would stop eating :).

Snoop is a 4 month old male. He was my first snake to escape (found him 2 weeks later), and that is why his name is Snoop. Brat of the family for sure!

http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc469/chranek/2012-09-9.jpg

Roger is a 5 month old male. He's a little more shy but turning into a very tame garter.

My old lady says the same thing, but I see albino flame and albino erythristics in my future...

I know what you mean, I can't do the albinos, though I still find some pretty, I'll stick with the reds and blues, well, some greens and yellows too. Brown doesn't work for me either, they remind me too much of the big snakes. :o

Molly is beautiful!

No love for poor Roger :(. I actually felt the same way for a long time, but the red sided albino grew on me. I am a real girly girl so this was a shock for my husband :). His little personality is so cute... that's all I see now :).

Thank you for the nice comments!

I actually love albinos. I think the white skin and pink/red eyes and markings look kind of babyish I guess. I've just always thought albino animals are cute:)

Snoop shed yesterday. It's so fun watching babies color up as they grow.

No, yes.

Also what is their temperament like. Thanks

No, yes.

LOL! Alrighty then. Well, maybe someday.

RedSidedSPR

Nothing really sticks out. Mostly a nice, normal temperament. Usually a little less personabable, but totally tolerable, kinda chilled in a still active way. Likes the water a lot, and is less attracted to the heat.

Those have stuck out to me with my two. Can't speak for other specimens but that's a pretty standard red sides temperament from what I've heard

Edit: "no yes" meant "no, not expensive, yes hard to find" but I meant in the wild. They're inexpensive and easy to find from breeders for the most part. My bad.

Thanks RedSidedSPR! I have seen the pics of your anery and he is awesome. From your videos he looks a little more black than Molly which is cool.

I don't know if Molly is a typical redsided female, but she has an amazing personality. She is like a dog! When she was young, she would hide a lot, but the last two years she is always hanging out waiting for attention. She has never tried to strike at me. When I reach in her cage she slithers right up my arm. She LOVES food and has never gone off it. Even when she is going to shed. I've never had a radix, but from the way Steve talks about them, Molly may have been a radix in another life :).

They are always up for sale when baby time comes around. And they are reasonably priced. I recommend them to all :)

Thanks for clarifying that, I was thinking I might have to search for years to find one to buy cuz they were so rare. ;)

Naahh... someone has them for sale every season. Albinos, anery's, snows. It's the snows that are a little more scarce, as that requires the snake to be both albino and anery simultaneously.

You could breed an anery to an albino, but if those parents don't carry the albino or anery gene (respectively) also, all you'll get is normal snakes het for both traits. Then you have to breed those together and cross your fingers that the babies will be homozygous for both traits. I think it's like, a 1 in 64 chance, or something like that. Odds aren't good for making snows and it requires more than one generation to even have the chance, if you just start out with an albino (het for nothing else) and an anery (also het for nothing else)

Lisa4john
11-07-2012, 09:21 PM
That's ok, I'm not interested in snow anyway. However the albinos are growing on me. Maybe someday, especially since they are the ones my hubby, who rarely has an opinion to share, besides, "Eh, it's a snake" likes them too... Thanks for the info.

I just wanna have Molly's twin... ;) I love her distinct markings and beautiful blue coloring... :)

The odds of having twins aren't very good as it is, and you want to have Molly's twin? Well good luck to you and your husband.:p

Still, someday I will find me a girl similar to Molly to call my own, I just need to be patient. I'm so glad she is such a good friend for you, Carly. :)

That first one of snoop is a good example of the very subtle change that occurs when albinos are getting ready to shed.
