I fear that poor Ziggy...the snake that my neighbors brought over...is dying. I have done what I can for her. She has been eating, but she still looks really thin and tonight she was just lying with her head down breathing out of the side of her open mouth. I put some moist moss in and some new hides to try to make her comfortable...but I am not sure what more I can do. I'm not even sure what is wrong with her. She has just seemed very sickly since she was brought to me.

Sorry to hear that... Maybe there is nothing you can do... She might just be a really old snake. With out taking her to the vet n spending all your money on tests after tests, there may be just nothing they find. Thing about wild caught snakes (As you know very well) is that you don't know what they've been through or how old they are or anything.
If she does pass on you just know n find comfort in the fact you mad her comfortable n gave her awesome free, easy to catch meals.

Sorry to hear Ziggy isn't doing very well. She was probably sick when you got her.
Comfort is about all you can do at this point.

Just let her do what she needs to do. Mother nature can seem cruel at times, but death is always for a reason. Sometimes we just don't know why. Sorry to hear the bad news.

Sorry to hear this Marnie. I'm glad she's had a nice place to stay and some one to take care of her for the past while.

Its sad when all you can do is make them comfortable, and its not enough.best
Just keep in mind how good it feels when they do recover, and know you did your best.

Thanks everyone...it means a lot that you care. She is still hanging in there. She looks very dull...I'm hoping that maybe she is just getting ready to shed and her nares are blocked...but she hasn't been very active and she doesn't look well. I will just have to wait and see. I'm going to feed everyone today...we'll see if she eats.

Marnie I'm sorry. We all know you're giving her the best care she can get and is certainly being cared for better than any garter snake could generally hope for. Our thoughts are with you.

Thanks, Peter. She wouldn't eat tonight. I'm just waiting to see what happens. I can't even hold her to comfort her because it just stresses her out too much...I don't want to make her feel worse.

Has she shed yet with you? maybe she'll be like my baby santa cruz girl n bounce back after taking FOREVER to shed.

Sorry to read about Ziggy. I hope that she does recover, but you know that you are doing everything you can for her. Good luck.

Thanks Kat...and no Michelle...she hasn't shed yet...I was beginning to wonder about that too. She looks dull and wrinkly...a little wrinkly...but to put her in a shed box would be so stressful for her. I am misting her plants and I put a little log in there for her yesterday so that she has something to rub against.

I bet you that's what it is! Maybe she is just as slow as my little one. (Who is now active n looking for food n doing way better) Do you have a moist hide for her? I bet she'd LOVE one. With my little eastern flame ery girl that has the line on her belly, I had a clear lid on her moist hide n had it right under the light, she love to sit in warm moisture whilst basking. Maybe Ziggy would enjoy the same? I'm sure a deli would give you a clear container for under 25cents :D
