Walmart sells worm bedding. $3 for a bag. It would last you a long time. Bass Pro and Cabelas also sell worm bedding and food.
$5 should set you up for some time.

If you put them in the fridge they should last pretty long but if you need them to stay alive longer go ahead and do what Steve said.

Just keep them cool, I got a pot of worms when it was cool so left it on the windowsill outside. It warmed up a couple of days later and I'd forgotten about them, so a few warm days later the contents of the pot weren't good.

I get my worms from a marine store...they come a dozen per little container. I usually buy three containers and keep them in the fridge...they last until the snakes eat them all. Last winter, though, when I wanted to have access to more worms on a regular basis...I got a worm farm container and bedding from Cabela's and then bought several dozen worms and put them in the container and kept them in my basement.
