I have an adult Valley garter snake Thamnophis sirtalis fitchi. I have had this snake since the spring of 2011 as an adult from the wild. He has been eating fine since I have had him on silverside fish and pinky mice roughly twice a week. This past month he has stopped eating completely and acts very agitated when his cage is accessed. Any thoughts would help and let me know if there is more information that I can provide.

Thanks!

Did you have a fecal done since he is wild caught?
Could just be a break from eating, seasonal change possibly.

My adults here in Northern California haven't been interested in food for the last couple of weeks. I'm guessing they're sensing the change in seasons and slowing way down on food in preparation for winter brumation. My males are very very interested in mating type behavior right now, which could also explain why your male is a bit agitated. That said, I'd hate for you to overlook something medical or environmental going on. A fecal check is never a bad idea. Do you have any supplemental light or heat in his enclosure? Have you changed the enclosure's location?

Tis the season for all kinds of funny behaviours. I have snakes who are eating more, less, or nothing. Probably nothing severe.
