In case any one is curious as to what babies look like inside of mom... 662466266627

It looks like Momma still has two more developing scrubs, so I'll keep her until they are delivered, then release her near the lake. Fingers crossed that these little ones are healthy!

That's really quite cool. What species is it? I wouldn't of imagined the babies being spread out like that.

Thank you for sharing :)

That is neat, I've always imagined them in balls...

Same here. All the pictures I've seen of newborns tend to be spherical in their little sacks

I'd have to agree. Never seen them stretched out like that.

That is soooo cool... yeah, kind of concerned about them being stretched out, though. Now I want to see more expectant moms xrayed so we know what's normal. My guys did come out curled in little disc shaped sacks.

Dude, that's awesome! Thanks for sharing that. I would've also thought they would be all balled up. Even humans, puppies, kittens, etc. are kind of curled up to an extent, before being born. I hope those guys that are still in there are ok. I would also be curious to see other gravid snake x-rays now, and see how they compare.

Not trying to be negative, but from what I've read about ovoviviparous, it seems like they basically are in an egg inside the mom until they are born. So, I hope these guys haven't "hatched" inside of her and are just sitting there.

Very neat. How do the membranes cover them when they are laying straight like that? Never seen an x-ray of a gravid garter snake before. Thanks for the pictures!

How do the membranes cover them when they are laying straight like that?

That's what I was thinking....That's why I hope they aren't "hatched" and just stuck.

I would be very interested to see how the birthing goes with this snake.

Very cool. My vet offered to take x-rays or an ultrasound to confirm that Cee Cee was gravid last spring. I just didn't have the money for it...but always wished that I could have seen it. Thanks for sharing. I don't know...some of Cee Cee's babies popped right out without looking like they were in a sac. I hope she delivers healthy babies. Please keep us posted.

One of the stillborns was all curled up like that. I thought it would be a normal way for them to develop, especially the way the jelly was shaped. Maybe it is an in utero developmental variation between snakes? Or maybe that's why 4/5 were still born. I've got my fingers crossed that these little ones are ok.

From what I've been told Mom is a red phase coast garter.
=D I work in an x-ray dept.

LOL, according to youtube it looks like a lot of snakes are born kind of spread out instead of balled up...

Thanks. =) If she wasn't pregnant we probably would have taken a few more. lol, Maybe I'll take her in for some more after she is "empty" and full of food instead...
