I found this little girl on a walk with my dog today. Decided to take her home. Very small, But feisty.

Not normal to find them in my area as there really is not a whole lot to eat. Gonna give the snake some time to adjust, then I get to find out what she likes to eat.

Had a bit of a scare today. I finally am getting Zeus to eat fish.....little stinker ;P
Went to check on the baby and she was gone! Not sure how she got out of the criter cage, but anyhow. Went nuts trying to find her.

My cat has a good habit of finding critters when they get out. This is gonna sound silly.... I told her '"Sabrina. Find the snake." Checked the bathroom...nothing. Went to search the bedroom and sabrina was focused on my car windshield cover thing. Sure enough the little snake was under there!

Gave my little hunter some cheese for finding the baby. Such a good cat. Put the escapee back in the cage and made sure the lid was on and locked.

Se is. Needs to learn to be calm, but good tempered. She tried to bite my boyfriend the other day. He just laughed at her.

Was gonna give her to a friend of mine who wants a garter, but I am such a sucker for a baby...I kinda want to keep her. I am keeping the baby separate until she starts to eat and I know that she is healthy.

Here she is next to Jesse. They were both really curious about each other. I made sure they both behaved. Still not wanting to eat.

Don't give her to a friend. Give her to me!!! Such a wonderful little snake. It's a shame I can't find vagrans up here. Keep her! She's beautiful.

If I was closer to where you live I certainly would.
I am leaning towards keeping the baby, just cause she is a cutie. Might go snake hunting for an older on for my friend today or tomorrow.

Is she in a critter carrier?(Like this ^)

Or a critter cage?(Like this^)

Apperantly babies are very good at escaping the critter carriers(the first image). I think sometimes they are able to squeeze through the little slats on top. Not positive. Just things I've heard on the forum.

Yes...I have heard of babies squeezing through the slats...and Wayne put up a post a while back about a baby who broke it's neck trying to get through a slat. If she is getting through the slats...you need to move her to another type of enclosure asap.

That's what mine did luckily I found her.I've got her in an exo terra now they are pretty much escape proof if you make sure the wire holes at the back are closed.

I do have my new little baby in a critter keeper for now...she can't reach the top yet. As soon as I see her getting near the top...she is being moved. All of my other babies share a 20L.

Inspired by this post, I decided to measure the space between the slats on three models (two of each) from a single manufacturer (Ferplast).

The smallest (Geo Extra Large)
Along the sides of the lid: 2 mm.
On top: 1.5 mm
Cable holes: 5.5 - 5.75 mm

The tallest (Geo Maxi)
Along the sides of the lid: varies from 2.25 - 3 mm.
On top: 2 mm, HOWEVER the row closest to the rim has slats that are >3.75 mm wide.
Cable holes: 5.5 - 5.75 mm

The biggest surface area (Geo Flat Large)
Along the sides of the lid: varies from 2.25 - 3 mm.
On top: 2 mm, HOWEVER the row closest to the rim has slats that are >3.75 mm wide.
Cable holes: 5.5 - 5.75 mm

These bigger ones clearly have slats and holes that are big enough for very small snakes to escape and personally, I avoid keeping the smallest snakes in these bigger models. The cable holes on all of them must be plugged, regardless of the width of the slats.

She is in the first one. I think the lid was open just a bit and she bumped it and got out.

If you have no where else to put her, be very careful, because those are the kind they can slip out of.

I am making sure that Bitz can't get out now. She sure is bity for a little snake. I went to touch her and little stinker grabbed my finger. She won't take guppies. Should I try worms? When they are this small what do they like?

I think generally for small ones people try the very small feeder guppies and cut up earthworms/nightcrawlers. Something people also try is putting the snake in a small container with water and some small feeder guppies. Leave them for a little while, and alot of times it seems to work(from what I have read on here) There is a video by Steve floating aroudn somewhere. I'll try and find it.

Here it is. Just an idea, at least if she doesn't eat soon.

She won't eat until she relatively feels safe, give her time to settle in to her new surroundings and keep the handling to a minimum.

Yea, didn't think to mention that. Since she is new WC she might not eat for a little bit. Might need to settle in for a while.

they're so cute :)

I am gonna try that with the baby. See if she will eat that way.

Good news. I am keeping the baby girl. I found another small one at the park so I am gonna re-home that one. It is the same size as the one I am keeping. A lot lighter in the face though.

The fish store near me is getting feeder guppies on friday. So I am gonna try the cup feeding thing then.

The other baby was taken to her new home last night. The guy is really cool and has delt with snakes before, but mostly pythons and boas. So we talked about garter care for a while. She seemed at ease with him, which i took to be a good sign. I told him that if she didn't start eating or got too hard to handle or anything like that I would get him an older, calmer one.

I am gonna try nightcrawlers with my new baby. See if that gets her eating.
