It is great to be part of the forum. I have learned a lot by reading the comments posted here. My kids (ages 11 and 8) and I have had two wandering garters (Thamnophis elegans vagrans) for quite a while and just recently found two beautiful plains garters (thamnophis radix). We are soooo excited about them and have gotten all of the neighborhood kids interested in snakes. Here are some pictures.

Hi and welcome to our forum family! Lovely snakes and lovely son! I have also been getting the neighborhood children and adults interested in snakes. Of course, now they bring every snake they find to me! :D

Wish I could get my son to hold our snakes. He loves them and talks to them through the tanks...but he still gets scared in terms of handling them.

Thanks for the great welcome. Love this forum and appreciate all of the knowledgeable support you all provide. I posted to the wild caught thread relative to a snake my neighbor has and love the suggestions made.

Marnie, as for your son being afraid of the snakes what I have found is that if you have the little kids work with baby garters they are able to very quickly get over their nerves. That is what did the trick for my daughter. I am hoping you are able to find one this coming spring and your boy will be interested in doing everything relative to the care of your snakes. I am thrilled with the engagement I have with my kids relative to taking care of the snakes.
