well I'm so excited I keep bouncing about like some sort of demented freak.
field school ended earlier this week (just in time for classes to start next week) and the work on my snake room is all but done so...
I picked out and bought a selection of garters and they should be here Wednesday!!
no one here understands. :( they looked at the pic I have and said "its a snake." then... "you already have a snake why do you need another?" <sigh> I hope everyone here understands. I'm so excited I can't sleep worth a damn. :P
Is it Wednesday yet????

Non-snake people do not understand...don't even bother trying to get them to understand. Of course we understand! Like Chris said...Tuesday night will be Christmas Eve for you! And of course you need another snake! We expect pics of the new arrivals, of course. :)

only a dozen. I ran out of cash. :( but I'm ridiculously excited about them...
1.0 Albino Het Snow Red Sided
0.3 66% Het Snow Red Sideds
0.1 Snow Red Sided
0.1 High Red Albino Red Sided
2.2 Erythristics
1.1 Erythristics Het Melanistic Poss Het Snow
The males are not related to the females... so if I decide to keep them togeather later, and they decide to breed, and there are actually off spring that won't be a worry. I'm only 112% certain I want babies at some point, so that is not completely decided... still the matter of when and what they think.
yup, ready set, die of impatience.

I've heard that "it's a snake" line more than once, lol! Like Marnie said, non-snake people just don't get it. I'm excited for you! Pics necessary once they arrive :)

Only one dozen?!:p Yes, and pics when they arrive!
kerensa
08-24-2012, 05:20 PM
yes only a dozen. I had to choose between what I wanted for red sided (think they're all gorgeous) Easterns (love the reads, albinos and melanistic) and the plains ( like most of them) May decide in the long run to just stick to the red sided and the Easterns. I did luck out and get a good selection. :)
Since in the long run most will be housed together in 48X24 enclosures, a dozen is much easier as far as space requirements go- using 4 or 5 enclosures. And now I have that whole snake room. :) It has 5 racks that have (4) 48x24 enclosures in each, for a total of 20 enclosures. (and yes they are all baby proof) so a dozen garters is not too many, feels like a good number. ;)

How exciting!!! I would be thrilled as well! Can't wait to see pictures of them all happy & healthy in their new home! Congrats!!!
Boy do I hear you about people not understanding... I've been quite tempted to block otherwise good friends from my facebook page this week because of their comments on my surprise garter baby pictures. Really is a bummer when you're so excited about something and people can't even be polite enough to be excited for you, even if it's not 'their thing.'

Red-sideds and easterns sound good to me. Snow red-sideds are gorgeous! Albino red-sideds are too. My little Joe is an albino red-sided. Will love to see the high red. Anxiously awaiting pics!

When I have had snakes shipped...I am always up in the morning an hour or two before the delivery time...staring out the window like a little kid waiting for the ice cream truck! Lol....
Can't wait to see pics of your new additions. Hope everyone arrives safely!

well 11 arrive in the morning and the last one arrives Thursday morning. She was forgotten. I'm now home and am making the hubby drive everyone else around in the morning and skipping classes so I'll be home to get my little ones :D have a ton of fresh trout and pinkies for them... got the enclosures all ready complete with fresh moss and brand spanking new hides and baths... everyone's having to make their own sammies for dinner so I can do the final polishing.
Now all I have to do is survive the impatience... and maybe bounce off a few more walls...
doubt I'll sleep tonight.
Pardon the spelling errors...

You will spend all this time making the perfect habitat and then when you put the critters in they will not hide in the "hides" they will find somewhere else, they will not do anything there supposed to. I spent a good amount of time making a a coconut hide and stratigicly placed it along with another hide and my snake hides in her vine. Good luck cant wait to see pics.

I know. rosy baby sleeps on her hide, hides inside her branch and generally craps in her pool. C'est la vie. I however felt like I was doing something important and critical while waiting. Self delusions are just one of my coping strategies ... don't ask about the others.

I think they poop in their water bowls because of gravity, gravity aids in bowel movements. Just imagine yourself trying to produce a stool sample while laying down. Plus the water helps, I mean what kid doesn't pee in the pool? (Sorry if I was gross :o)

yes forever describes it well enough. Mine also says out for delivery. As far as I can tell that's just to make sure I am at the window every 23 seconds or so when I hear a car drive by...
btw- what do you have arriving?

my red sided ate, one of the eurthyristic (spelling?) a female wanted to be on my hand. a male het melanistic curled up in my hand and was happy enough to stay there. otherwise I've not tried to hold or interact with them yet. They seem to be thinking "wtf?!?" The easterns didn't touch food. they all seemed much more interested in finding out how tall their enclosure is.

my redsided didn't mind being handled, my florida blue is a little spazzed out, and my babies want to eat me :D

two of the easterns are now eatting. my red sides all seem to want to just be left alone. :( I am not going to try to force them to be held. I'm going to simply start letting them get used to my hand in a few days once they don't all dive for cover when I walk near. I think the woman who delivered them was not at all careful. she came to the door with the box on its side under her arm and then handed it to me upside down. she appoligized when I freaked and told me she didn't realize that it contained live animals. So I don't blame them for being a bit freaked. I was surprised they ate so fast.

think I'm gonna have to go stock up on nightcrawlers now, and pinkies. now all we need is some pics! haha
kerensa
08-29-2012, 09:19 AM
when the other half gets home I shall ask him to take some pics *if* we can find a camera. I have my 35mm and its macro lens would be wonderful for these little ones, but its not digital. (I'm not a new tech sort of person- most new tech just makes me want to get a horse and buggy)
The little snow redsided did crawl up into my hand when I was putting a bit more trout into the enclosure. the trout is a huge hit. the night crawlers- not so much. one has a huge bulge as it swallowed something a bit too big sideways. but its going down and the little one (an eastern female) if anything seems more fiesty and active now. *shrug* plenty of time to worry later...

I think mine poop in the water to keep me working! Lol. Congrats on the arrivals! Sometimes, depending on how they are shipped...the shipping company does not know there are live animals in the box because it is technically not allowed. The box should be marked "handle with care" though.

they were shipped UPS. Our local ups has a bad reputation of using boxes as soccer balls, and speed bumps. This box arrived in good condition. The fact that she had not noticed the handle with care labels or the the this way up arrows is not all that surprising. At least it wasn't fedex. our local fedex is 10 times worse. My mortgage papers were found three weeks late in a neighbors bushes 4 houses away when they were sent fedex overnight with signature required... I find fedex deliveries tossed behind my garage a few times a year- usually for houses 2+ streets away (my garage backs onto a street and has a fence with a space between.) So I can't help but feel that a little bit of the box being turned on its side is really quite careful handling considering. We have a regular UPS woman however and she really does try to be as careful as she can while being in a huge rush.
they are now eating a second time.

well at this point they seem to eat and hide. Most won't even eat if I'm watching. I occasionally go and hunt through the moss and count horrified noses to make sure they are all still amongst the wiggling.
