Ok so I'll do it too:D And hopefully in the not too distant future I will have more to add!
So I wanted to start with this pic.
6407
This is something he likes to do pretty often. He'll go and rest his chin on the branch, the waterbowl, just any ledge. It's really cute:) He'll sit there for a couple hours sometimes, I think maybe he likes to sleep like that, but not sure since he doesn't have eyelids....:p Does any one elses snakes rest their heads like this?
Heres another pic from the other day(the first one is from today).

Today is also feeding day:D

He looks like a mellow, relaxed snake. If he's resting his chin and not moving for a while there's a good chance he's sleeping. My female radix will sleep almost anywhere and if she's really sleeping I can touch her without her waking up - it's really disconcerting.

Nice looking guy! My garters do it all the time, they constantly lay their heads on the rim of their water bowls. I think it's because they associate the water with where they find food. I sort of tested the theory by introducing a fish smell around their enclosure and as soon as they got a whiff of it they went to their water bowl and hovered over it for about 15 minutes waiting for any signs of movement inside it. A couple of them even dunked their heads in it waving side to side.

Yea I know for sure mine associates his water with food. If it's been a little longer than normal between feedings he'll start nonchalantly passing by/over/in his waterbowl. Something he doesn't do often. At least not back and forth and back and forth:p

Hmm...Lots of garters on my mind, but I'd really like to get a female T. p. orarius so they can breed. But I'd probably still want to wait even after I get a second (or more!) snake until I start breeding them...I'd also like an infernalis, a blue puget, albino checkered, radixes have really been growing on me(I love their faces:))..Hmm I could go on a little, but those are the main ones that come to mind. But I really do like them all:D
And I will be putting up more pics;)

I can do this with my kingsnake, I choose not to mostly though. He really does have quite the temper if startled.
Emily, you have a very nice ribbon there. I really hope to get a couple myself some day :)

They do it as a joke. Many times I've let out a "Oh, no" thinking I had lost a snake due to the fact they refuse to move. Only to reach in, touch them and have them look at me like "what's going on man, I was sleeping"
The little jerks. It's not funny. It's not funny.:D

I have witnessed all of the above...snakes resting their heads on water bowls, snakes resting their heads on just about anything including just lying in the substrate looking like they are dead and scaring the crap out of me...heck, I have found Possum lying upside down not moving and he has really scared me to death! Little Joe's new thing is to just lie inside his moist moss hide all the time and not move...I have to open it up from time to time to check and make sure he is okay! Hermes sleeps under his water dish all the time...and Bella now lives inside a cardboard box...I rarely see her...I think she is going to shed soon. Garters like to mess with us to keep us on our toes!

LOL They are pretty cool. I do believe it's called "Hens and Chickens"(?) It's a type of succulent plant. They grow like crazy! All you have to do is take a petal(technically its a leaf, those aren't really the flowers) and lay it down, don't even have to bury it, and it will start to grow. That's how we've ended up with so many:p

I think these snakes are able to sense changes in things like light durations, light intensity along with changes in air pressure, humidity and other seasonal changes.
Much of this can't be changed it's pre-wired in them.
Much the way my boy Tank (Chelydra serpentina - common snapping turtle) is restless. He's hoping for a mate that just isn't going to happen.

I've noticed Proximus has been rahter reclusive the last few days. It seemed a little weird considering he had been abnormally active the past week or two before. I had really barely seen him, and just barely saw his head the few times I did see him. So, this morning I got him out and checked him and noticed he looks real dull colored and his eyes are going a little blue. I'm excited he's going to finally shed again! He's only shed once since I found him and that was in May.
I also just bought him his first nightcrawlers, but will have to wait till after he sheds to try and feed them. I'll be putting up some shiny pics after he's done shedding:)

Welllllllll, he didn't:rolleyes: I don't know if it was able to crawl out on it's own or if he pulled it out, but I found it still alive on the paper towel, so I put it outside. Since it was in the water for so long I didn't know if it still might die, so I didn't want to put it back in the worm container. He ate a couple of fish. Snakes continuously grow throughout their lives, but as adults their growing drastically slows down. You posted in another thread that Proximus is 21 inches, that seems to be around the average size for adult ribbons. I don't think he will get much longer and don't be surprised if he only sheds every 2-3 months. :)

Woopsie! Never got the pic and my camera is in a box at my friends apartment:rolleyes: I'll get a pic when I can, I'll be moving him and most of my stuff in the next couple days, so we'll see when he get's settled in.
Well I'm happy to say the baby Earthsnake officially ate two small cut up nightcrawler pieces!(I guess I'm keeping her, if she contintues to do well:))Well, I didn't actually see it but I gave her 8 pieces and in the morning there were only 6 left! The bowl I put them in has curved in edges so I don't think the pieces could have cralwed out. I've tried to feed her a handful of times, but never thought to count the pieces first...
I'm calling her a her because I read they can be visually sexed the same as garter snakes. Even though she's a baby, she looks, to me, definite female. Assuming she is a she I'm calling her Virgo, after her scientific name Virginia striatula. She's been mostly active at night. Actually only active at night. I've never seen her in the day. But sometimes, I come home at night, and flip on my bedroom light, and there she is, in the middle of the cage. When I see her out I quickly do what I need with the light on and turn it back off for her:) She's a good girl!
So back to Proximus. I tried tricking him with some cut up nightcrawler pieces with his fish(which worked last time) and the little S.O.B. passed them all up and just ate the fish:rolleyes: What a little brat:p We'll just keep trying at it...He had two pinkies today, so I know he's happy. He's out exploring right now.
P.S. Speaking of her only coming out at night I actually just saw her peeking her head out of the substrate in the light for the first time:)(Not exactly daytime, but "lighttime")
P.P.S. Is it ok for me to post about Virgo on this thread or do I need to just post that stuff in the "Other Pets" thread?

So everybody did very well for the move. I mean it wasn't much of a move, just like 10 minutes away, but a move nonetheless:p I put each snakey in a little sock and then put them in their containers. I ended up not tying up the socks, because I figured they would be a little nervous and not even want to come out during the ride. Well, Proximus said " 'F' that, I'm checkin out this car ride." :p He came out and was checkin everything out until I put him back in his cage at the apartment. Baby Virgo stayed in her sock until I got her out. Since we got here(last Thurs.) Virgo ate twice, so that makes 3 times total since I found her:D Proximus hasn't eaten yet since we got here. I tried feeding him and he ignored it, so I gave it a few days and I'm trying again today. Other than that he's been fine, possibly even more active than at my grandparent's house. Maybe because he just got here and he's still being curious and nosey:p
Anyways here's pics from today.

In the second picture, if you look sort of on the side of her body right above my middle finger, you see a little grayish bump thing. She's got a few of them on her body. I didn't notice it when I first found, but she was getting bitten up by fire ants. The ants were latched onto her like ticks. Then a day or two later I saw some grayish spots. Then a few days later they turned into bumps. Now they're going away. Could those be ant bites? I didn't get super concerned, because thats what I assumed they were.

Edit: I also want to continue my report from earlier, that Tallie finished her worms pieces! I gave her 9 total, 6 were super small, like the size of tiniest noodles in Spaghetti-o's:p And the other three(the first ones she went after!) were close to 1/4 inch.

A little blurry, but cute! I had my hand resting in the water, and after a while of swimming around, he came up and rested his head on my hand:) When he was done swimming, I let him and Tallie see each other through the glass. He didn't seem to notice, and was just trying get inside of her cage:p(She is in his old cage.) But she came up and seemed to be pretty excited to see another snake.

Her head is barely above his, to the left(kinda blends in with the substrate). I'm going to have to get them each a friend as soon as I can:)

Yes, Emily, Tallie and Little Joe are from the same litter. I had reptibark in my tanks for a while. The albinos seemed to really like it...and yes, their colors really stood out in it. I use it from time to time. Just make sure you get the actual reptibark if you buy that. I bought a generic kind and it really had a strong pine smell. From what I understand about reptibark, it is made of pine but treated so that the aromatic oils that can be bad for snakes are removed. I don't think they did that with the generic brand I bought. Check the bag of any kind of wood substrate you buy...unless it's aspen which is safe. It should tell you if the aromatic oils have been removed.

So, Tallie ate her third meal here today! Second meal was some pinkie feet and a tail and one body piece, and three worm pieces. Finished it;) Today she had just some night crawler pieces. One was bigger than any I've given so far(maybe 1/2 inch) and she went straight for it:D
Virgo shed the other day. She was in blue phase at the same time that Proximus was, at least I tought, but I never found her shed. Well, I found it the other day, and it's got black spots where here bumps were. When I got her out I noticed the spots on her look like she has no scales where those little bumps were. I tried to get the best pictures I could. On the pic of her, I put a red circle around one of the areas of the spots.

So, today(about 30 minutes ago) I let Virgo go. She hasn't eaten since she shed about 3 weeks ago. I'm not sure why she stopped, but I don't want to keep her till she dies possibly, just trying to make her eat again. She's still very active, so I think she'll be ok. I also wanted to do it before it got too cold. I'll miss her, but I think she'll make it out there:)

Tallie shed today! Nice and complete. But while examining her I found something a little weird. The very tiny tip of her tail is a darker brown color. I tried the get the best pics I could.
7438 7439
The first one's a little blurry, and the second ones a little far away, but they were the best ones I was able to get. The tail end looked complete on the sehd, and it doesn't look like any skin left on her tail, I don't think:confused: Could it be from having skin stuck on from another shed?
guidofatherof5

It would be caused by a retained tip I didn't see. Sorry about that, it's my fault. She will loss the tip of the tail because of this.

So everybody's been doing fine:) Tallie still has her voracious apetite. Hasn't skipped a meal, eating unscented pinkies(cut up). I did try a couple small pieces of silverside with her worms once, and she did skip over that. I was going to wait until I can find some tilapia with no additives, but haven't been able to find any yet. I know that's what she ate with Steve, so when I find some I think she'll take to it. Proximus has been slowing down on eating. Still very active, but will only eat maybe one pinkie or one fish per feeding. I think he knows it's winter. He was a wild snake so I'm sure he's brumated in the wild and probably knows it's that time of the year.

Glad to hear the snakies are doing well. Don't worry too much about the tip of the tail thing...it happens with a lot of snakes...it's hard to see that retained shed sometimes. Hi everybody:) Sorry haven't been on or updated for a while, but now I'm having a little issue with Porximus.
Ever since around winter time he hasn't been eating much, and now he hasn't eaten in close to a month. I feel like the problem might be that I didn't brumate him this winter and it threw him off. He is a WC snake, so I think when winter came around and the temperature didn't change it threw his schedule off and now it's killed his apetite. He hasn't been super active, and doesn't seem to have lost much weight if any, but I don't want to kill him just trying to take care of him. Right now I can only really think of two things to do: 1) Do a semi-brumation and just cool him off with no lights/heat, and see if he'll start eating after that(as I don't have a freezer warm enough to brumate him in) or 2) Let him back go near where I found him.
Any suggestions/input/anything?
As for Tallie, she is still eating and growing like a weed :D She's becoming very bold. The other day I was feeding her by hand and she grabbed my finger and was trying to take it with her :p

Today I had Tallie out and decided to let her and Proximus have a face to face supervised meeting. They have both been all alone for quite a while so I wanted to see how they would each react outside of the glass. This is what happened :) 8870 I just let them hang out for a few minutes while I watched them. So that leads me to my question: Can two males be housed in a 20 gallon(normal, not long) comfortably? Tallie and Proximus are female and male of two different species and can't live together, but I'm think it's time for a roommate for Proximus:)

As a general idea, the snake should not exceed the length plus the width. If you have another that size, add 1 square foot. Not sure how big your snakes are, or what you mean by "regular" 20 gallon because there are more than 2 different dimensions for a 20 gallon but I think it will work.

I haven't been on in a while, so thought I'd give a little update.
Tallie is still doing very well, and being awesome  I've recently switched her and Proximus' cages, so she is now in a 20 gal., and he in a 10 gal. Tallie uses every inch of her cage, and Proximus seems to prefer the smaller one. In the bigger one he would stay hidden all the time, but in this one he comes out and about a lot more often. I've gotten Proximus to start eating pretty well now, too. I've gotta put him in a dark separate container with a bowl of live guppies, and I can throw a pinkie in there very once in a while too. And Tallie continues to eat no problems what-so-ever, like always :D
