Today was a feed day for my group of largest female radixes.
Speckle dominates this paddock but she got into a fight over a pinky. Before I knew it I had blood dripping off her face at a pretty good pace.
I first tried to apply some pressure to the cut with a paper towel but that was doing no good.
I took her out of the enclosure and applied s styptic pencil to the wound for about 30 seconds. Speckle wasn't too happy about this but stayed with me.
I'll let the cut dry out a little and then apply a coating of A+D ointment.
She returned home and downed another 5 pinkies.

When it's feeding time, things can definitely get a bit vicious, haha! Glad it's nothing too serious.

Poor girl!:( But like Mike said, I'm glad it's not really bad.

I'm still waiting for the first blood to be drawn around our feeding times. With no more than two in a viv it's easier for me to supervise. That sort of wound is fairly superficial, right Steve?

Yes but it produced more blood then I expected.
I think her heart rate(blood pressure) was up due to the fight and it being feeding time.

When I'm feeding Neo,Martha comes upto the glass in her viv,and if Neo doesn't take his second pink she looks out sort of expectantly....as if to say I'll have it if he won't.

ouch........poor girl, but good to know she is in good hands. And I guess I'll be adding A+D ointment to my snake first aid kit. Is there a certain brand or just look for A+D ointment.

Generic works just fine.
Vaseline, zinc oxide, hibiclens, silver sulfadiazine and mineral oil are all good to have around.
My Vet. wrote the script for the silver sulfadiazine and Sam's Club filled it for $4

I loooove a+d... I stopped seeing it around here though. It's pretty much the same as neosporin and polysporin, etc... But when I was a kid a+d worked better it seemed.

I'm glad she is okay. Quick thinking with the styptic pencil...I love those things...they are great to have around. I need to get a new one. I have everything on the list except for the silver sulfadiazine and the styptic pencil. Oh, I think I need to get zinc too.

Thanks for posting this Steve. I'll be putting my females in a communal enclosure soon so I'll be keeping an eye out for food related violence. My two new males are already together, but I haven't had to feed them yet.

This stuff is used by groomer to stop the bleeding on cut toe nails. It can be bought in powder form but is much more expensive. I shave some off with a knife using the powder or stick when neccessary.

Have you checked in the baby section of walmart? Mine stocks it by the diaper rash ointment.

I haven't... I stay away from anything that has to do with babies, usually. I don't like them.

For the past 4-5 weeks I have been feeding my albino checkereds fish and recently received some pinks from Layne Labs and fed it to them yesterday. They went crazy for it as if they were starving and there was a food fight and 2 of them had a tiny drop of blood on them, 1 had a drop near its nose and the other on its mid-section. I separated them and cleaned off the blood with some water. My question is.. Is it a necessity to use some sort of ointment or treatment on their tiny wounds?

Probably not necessary but under most circumstances but I don't think it could hurt.
I treat minor thing also.

I'd also like to say that for me it was kind of weird that their blood was red, I always associate blood with mammals/warm blooded creatures. Snakes and reptiles in general are such majestic creatures that I was sort of expecting their blood to be any other color but red, lol silly me

From my understanding, styptic pencils are also often used by men for shaving cuts. I use them for just about everything. They are quite handy for stopping any small amount of bleeding.

I could have used one to shove up my nose. I got a bad nosebleed. Haha.
