Hey all, I've been lightly lurking on here the past few months after I found a Dekay's brown snake in my yard and decided to keep it. Even tho a Dekay isn't a garter, I found more info here than anywhere else online. So when we discovered 15 little babies in the snake tank yesterday, I knew it was time to finally officially join the ranks around here.

Welcome. Nice to have you with us. You've probably already found the care sheet but I'll supply a link anyway.

Welcome Mindy! Plenty of members don't even own garters. We welcome anyone with an interest in them. Dekayis are very lovely snakes and we often discuss them on here. Don't worry...you will want some garters soon enough. We have a way of sucking people in....;).

Welcome to the forum! My first snakes were Dekays, caught in a vacant lot in Dorchester Ma. Remarkable experience for a city boy! 50 years later they stll bring me pleasure when i find them around my yard.

Indigoman: Dorchester, wow! I'm in revere, and found mine on our concrete patio. It's so strange how they thrive in heavily populated areas.
Everyone else: I do love garters, I don't have a ton of knowledge on them or anything, but I've caught my fair share in my youth... I just really love my Dekayi because she (now THEY) cost me nothing to maintain. Worms and slugs from the yard, paper towel or old newspaper in the tank. Some old fish tank ornaments for hides... Bing bang boom, free pet. :)

Any questions you have just ask, there is a great and experienced group here. If you could share some pics of the babies and mom would be nice!

Welcome to the forum. Would love to see some pics. I also have a Dekayi female. Her favorite food is her sluggies. Next are the worms. Good luck with her/him.

I had no idea there dekays were common up that way! I grew up on the North Shore and found nothing but water snakes and garter snakes (though, admittedly, I was usually fishing... and those both love the water!).

Mindy...don't worry about not knowing much about garters. I knew nothing about them when I first joined this site a couple of years ago. Now I like to think of myself as somewhat of an expert on them...pat, pat. Lol. Although I learn something new everyday. There are certainly members on here that know much more than I do...they teach me so much and I am so grateful for this site and my friends!

I remember when Cee Cee had her babies...I thought, most of the nightcrawlers in my back yard are 3 times the size of those babies! Those babies of yours are just precious. Be careful handling them...the little buggers are slippery and fast! They love to pop out of your hands and scurry away! :)

I had 2 of them attempt to eat today! But the pieces of worm were still a little too big and got spat out. But at least I know they WILL eat. Those 2 are now separate and in the "keep" container. :) the next 3 that eat will join them, and then the rest will be released.

Came home to 3 more full bellies, so I kept 6, and released the other 10. Bittersweet moment. But at least i know I've got 6 good eaters. :)

As long as you don't stuff them at every meal they can probably eat everyday.
