Baby Garter Snake rehomeing (http://denver.craigslist.org/pet/3160752047.html)

I feel really bad for this poor little wandering. Should I try to get the snake. This person is feeding the snake goldfish. I can't imagine how messed up his digestion is.

What to do?

Poor thing , first thing I must ask is are you ready to take on more than one snake ? or maybe you could try teaching the " Do's and Do not's" in garter snake care and the person might reconsider keeping it.

I have an empty tank right now.

I was thinking of seeing if I can borrow money from my friend to get the snake. I just feel bad that the snake is being cared for so poorly. Sorry I just have a soft spot for animals in need.

Trust me I know how you feel , If it weren't so far I would take it myself.

Since you have an empty tank go right ahead , and the fact is the snake doesn't have a bad owner just she doesn't know how to take care of it and if she's trying to re-home it , she must care for it. you might actually be able to deal with her and get it for free who knows. But IMO go right ahead :)

I wouldn't recommend you getting this snake.

1. You have to borrow money to purchase the snake.

2. The snake is being fed goldfish and earthworms, those 2 have the potential of having already introduced parasites into the snakes gut, which the snake may need treatment for by a vet, which means you will need more money.

I would recommend that you tell the person selling the snake about this forum so he/she may join and/or read the care sheet on here for the proper care of garters, and the person can post a classified for the snake on here instead of selling the snake to some random on CL who may know nothing about garters.

P.S. If money wasn't an issue then I would say go for it! :)

If the person is able to sell the snake, getting money might encourage them to pull a bunch of random snakes out of the wild just to sell them.

Thats a good point. reptile vets are probably expensive.

I may call and ask some questions about the little guy.

After much thought I have decided to avoid this snake. I would love to rescue him. Give him some comfort and the proper care, but I have gotten no response from the seller.

I just think that it is not a good idea after all.

Sometimes you just have to let things happen.

Lots of people on this forum feed their garters earthworms (nightcrawlers). Are we now having to address parasite issues with them?

What parasites do the nightcrawlers have? Is it serious for our snakes?

Mine dont like the taste of worms so I just give them fish and (when I can get some more) pinky mice.

From all I've read the risk of parasites from night crawlers is very low.
Many of my wild caught radix were negative on a fecal float. Night crawlers are the main food source for them in the wild and here on the Ranch.
