I was quite happily finishing my dinner when I saw some movement out of the corner of my eye, and to my surprise I saw a little squiggly cruising around my Marcianus birthing box :) She'd been really holding onto this litter and I thought she'd never drop them lol she had 31 in total but 6 of those were still born, 3 had "bug eyes" but they're staying with me so I can be sure they're never bred from and the rest were all fine and strong. Most of them shed straight away and as I had some spare salmon the next day I tried them with some but only one had some.

Lots of cute babies! Congrats! I have a female eastern that likes to hold on to her litters and eventually starts to reabsorb them...leading to stillborns. She managed to have 3 live last time. I will not breed her again though. It always worries me that she will hold on too long and become septic. Glad your girl finally gave birth! Keep us posted on how she is doing.

How long a time frame did she hold them? I have a radix that dropped 1 last Thursday night and now here we are a week later and no other litter mates. She is really starting to worry me. Congrats on your litter, great looking group. Love the look of the albinos. Hope these guys produce some one day.

Congrats Peter . Never tire of seeing these photos. Like the idea of a birthing box, saves hunting through a four foot viv for a load of tiny scrubs!

We put the albino male to her at the end of Feb and she gave birth 4 months later.

it doesn't seem to bother them, well it hasn't yet. They can see fine and they shed fine this time, only thing is I think the eyes make the head a bit heavy so they can just flop if they try going up the side of their enclosure.

Hey thanks for posting the pics! Is there some sort of bacterial fluid in the eyes that makes them big like that? Is there any sort of treatment for it? Will they lose their eyes or vision as they get older?

Interesting pics of the bug eyes.
Also interesting that they shed with no problems. Has anyone kept bug eyed snakes to adulthood? At a guess I'd imagine they're more likely to damage their eyes as they are bigger and more exposed. I'd also suspect there could be a brain defect too because the optic nerve and retina is effectively an extension of the brain. Although none of that in itself is necessarily a problem.

Congratulation for the litter.
I´ve never seen such "bug eyes" by birth.
Really scaring pictures ( I agree to Steve)!

I'm not too sure why it's happened, both parents are perfect and completely unrelated so it was a real surprise, I've seen the bug eye trait in leucistic rat snakes but never in garters. I'd take them to my local rep vet but he's only in once a week and doesn't really know much on garters, last time I saw him I was teaching him info on the speices.

Congrats on the litter!
Those poor "bug eye" guys!:( I've seen one with that deformity on google before, while looking at garters, can't remember what I typed in now, and can't find the pic, but I remember it was a baby too. It looks like it could be painful, or at least uncomfortable. Glad they seem to be doing well.

sorry not been on in a long time, a few have started to eat and some are really greedy pigs and demolish as much food as you put in :) The "bug eyed" ones are still going strong but still haven't eaten yet.
