I regularly purchase mouse pinks from rodentpro for my garters and just today I read on another forum that they have or recently had a zoonotics outbreak in their facility. Does anyone know if this is true?

I found this link but it doesn't mention the business..

I hadn't heard anything but I don't order from them. Did they stop taking orders around the given dates?

Hmm...I usually order from Mice Direct. However, the last shipment of pinkies, I ordered from Rodent Pro...I wanted to try them. I liked the way they packaged the mice better than the way Mice Direct does it, however, I wasn't impressed with the mice. I prefer Mice Direct's mice. I planned on ordering from them next time. Mice Direct had a samonella outbreak years ago...but they now take measures to prevent it. I guess all of these places have bacterial outbreaks from time to time. The important thing is that they take preventative measures to ensure it doesn't happen. At least I know that Mice Direct does that now...so I guess I will stick with them.

Btw...what the heck is zoonotics? Being a nursing student, I thought I had studied all of the possible bacterias and viruses that can be transmitted. I have never even heard of zoonotics.

It totally makes you like animals a little more. I mean, most animals are soft and fuzzy... And usually cute when they're babies.

Okay...I looked at the link. Like I said...we studied every known bacteria and virus that can be transmitted from animal to human. I have never heard of LCM...of course I am not a zoologist or vet...but we studied all of the diseases that can be transmitted to humans. Weird. My microbiology teacher used to work for the Ag department for the University of DE. She never mentioned that disease either. Must be extremely rare.

Wikipedia has heard of it.

Mice Direct had a samonella outbreak years ago.

... which is a zoonotic. I wonder what this rodent pro zoonotic is? I mean, there's a lot of diffferent zoonotic diseases so why be so general?

Oh, nevermind. I see that the article says it's Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis known as LCM or LCMV.

And BTW, they really didn't need to mention the business name being how Rodent pro is the only rodent production facility in Indiana that fits the description.

Sounds scary. I order from Layne Labs out of CA. They have never had an outbreak of anything (that they have disclosed any way)

I use MiceDirect, the upside of their disease breakout years ago is that now they irradiate all of the mice before selling them.

pinks were 12 cents, now 20 cents.

Order by the thousand, and that's a huge increase.

Going to be a while. It's going to cost a million dollars ballpark, to repopulate the losses.

Now they are sold out of most mice and taking backorders....

probably be best to order elsewhere for now.

Probably because the problem only affected one of their facilities. They have more than one.

Concinnus, that makes sense.

Has anyone ordered from Rodent Pro lately? I'm thinking about buying from them this time because they have sales on the sizes I actually need.

Well good luck. There seems to be a massive shortage lately. Many producers are accepting orders ONLY from return customers and people are still having to wait due to a huge backlog.

So not on as big a scale but I would like to have preventative measures, how do I protect from this sort of thing?

I just placed an order and didn't see anything about delays. Supposed to ship next week/no later than 2 weeks so here's hoping. Then again, I only ordered from what's on sale this week so I know they have 'em.

Wish I'd seen your post earlier, I've purchased from them earlier this year and was satisfied. Right now they are having a great sale on f/t rat pinkies and I also have an online coupon code for $10 off. If anyone needs the code just PM me. The sale and coupon code expire 4/25/2013

Bah! I did throw in some rat pinkies. I figure I can feed them to the garter girls. Really good deal when looking at price per gram.

I just wanted to update now that I have product in hand - very impressed with the size of the feeders when compared to their (sale) prices. The shipping materials were bulky, cheap and ugly (2 sheets of insulation in a "cross", 10kg of dry ice, product in freezer bags) when compared to Layne Labs (reuseable styrofoam cooler, less dry ice needed, product in freezer bags inside of thermal bags) but they got the job done. The rat pinkies are about the size of hopper mice and were a steal at only 29 cents each.

Bottom line: didn't like the packaging but the product looks great.
