View Full Version : Too much stuff in cage?

So I cleaned my snake man's cage today and decided to switch it up a little. I had a couple new things that I had bought and hadn't used yet, and wanted to! So, the way it's setup now is he's got his fake plant, his basking/climbing branch, a big waterbowl(brand new to him, was a pre-made macaroni container;)) and his "hide." I'm calling it a "hide" because it's not like a real hide-hide. He can hide in it, but not as much as he could in a cave type thing, or box of some sort.(It was actually an aquarium decoration, but I thought it was cool!)

Here are my questions:
1. Looking at the picture, do you guys think he has too much stuff in there now? (He's in a 10 gal right now)
2. If not too much stuff now, could I afford to put something else in there? (I'd like to give him a more adequate hide)
3. I have the water bowl on the warm side, but not directly under the light, is that ok?
4. I dropped his lamp today() and the lowest wattage bulb I could find in the house was a 60 watt. I put it in the lamp and have it up about 2 inches over the terrarium, rather than sitting straight on top, is that going to be too much?

The "hide" I'm referring to is on the left there, in front of the plant. It's some sort of little Japanese hut type of thing. He can climb in the bottom and hide in the substrate. I sort of have it buried down in the substrate. Or if he really wants to, he could climb in the top and curl up in the roof. Currently, after thoroughly inspecting his new setup, he's found a spot to burrow.

The red circle is where his head is at:p He was hiding in the first pic, but in the second one he had poked out his head:) (I know neither pic is great...sorry for the quality:rolleyes:)

I think it's a very good set up and he has plenty of space to move around and I'm sure he'll enjoy meticulously inspecting his new surrounding. The hide seems fine and their is no real need to buy a pet shop hide if he is comfortable with the one you gave him.If you are unsure about the basking light buy a thermostat.I'm sure some American and Canadian members can recommend some good thermostats for you:)

^ There's a pic of the thing he's got ^

When you say thermostat(I feel dumb asking this....)do you mean like something to adjust the temp of the light/lamp or just like a thermometer?(Just want to be sure I understand, because if it is the first one..I didn't know they even made those!)

Forgot to mention that the type of thermostat you'll need for a light bulb is a dimmer thermostat.I'm not sure what thermostats are on the market in America so ask some of the American members for decent thermostats.

I did a quick look at Petco and Petsmart online and found only one kind at Petco, so I'll probably go up there and find out about, because on the description it doesn't say it can be used for lights. It just says heating cables, heating mats, and "other heating systems..." Not sure what that means....:p

Edit: If not I bet they have them at Home Depot, or some kind of hardware store.

Yep, a hardware store will carry all kinds of dimmers and switches. I bet they'll have thermostats too but a small one specifically for reptiles might be cheaper than the industrial models.

Cage looks good!

In regards to a thermostat, I wouldnt bother with Petco. Chain stores sell garbage. I just googled reptile stores in Houston. Check these guys out.

Looks good. Zena and Cleo love to explore their places when I add things. I always have lots of stuff to switch out to keep them interested, don't want a bored snake. It could lead to drinking, drugs or worse.
