So I have had my Vagrans for over 3 months now. We are getting along really well, she is an awesome snake! I measured her length as best I could the day I got her, she was 33 cm long. She has had two sheds, this last one was on July 8th and when I measured the length of the shed it was 40.5 cm long. She has graduated from worms to pinkies and now to fuzzies.

If she was about 33 cm long when I found her in April would that mean she was born in 2011?

While I have had her I have captured three different Radix. I haven't kept any more than a couple days. One day I will find the right Radix for me, lol.

Pics to follow...

This guy is a Radix I'm about to release. He is HUGE compared to Lich. I sexed him as male, am I right?

Yes, that is a male. Good looking boy.

Sheds are not a very accurate way to measure a snake. Most shed will be longer then the snake really is.
The shed usually stretches out during the removal process which means you are measuring the scales and the skin between them.
Then once in awhile you'll get a shed that is shorter then the actual length of the snake.
Best to use a ruler. There is also a computer program used to measure them. I don't use it and am not familiar with it.
I'm sure another member can tell you about it.

I'm not sure about the whole fuzzy thing. I have heard from some members that the fur can be bad for digestion. Beautiful vagrans though! Thanks for the update. Is it just me...or does that radix have an odd bulge in his throat in the second pic?

33cm is probably a year old... maybe two if food was scarce (not likely in Aurora), but probably one. vagrans are commonly ~20cm when born, they're some of the larger babies in North America.

A healthy and well hydrated snake should be able to pass the fur on fuzzy with no problem but its probably safer to wait until they are fully grown.

Nice looking vagrans! I dont think she should have any problem passing the fuzzies. They have more of a "fuzz" than actual hair. Vagrans are also known to eat a higher percentage of mice in the wild if I am correct. Perhaps their system is better suited to mammal prey.

Thanks! It is good to know about not measuring sheds, I never thought about the stretching and drying and all. Lich (my Vagrans) seems to have no trouble with the fuzzies, but I will keep an eye out for any problems.
