I took better pics of the genitals of both of my snakes.
I just wanted to get a new opinion about the sex of the two snakes.

The first set is of my Wandering.

Dexter is a girl???

I know this is gonna be a dumb question, but what are the visual clues to distinguish males from females?
I have tried to look it up online, but everywhere I look says to prode them....it just seems invasive.

Visual sexing is pretty accurate with garters. Here's a link to the first guide I ever found:

Alan's Garter Snakes - Maintenance of Garter Snakes (http://www.gartersnake.co.uk/maintenance.htm#Sexing) snakes (http://www.gartersnake.co.uk/maintenance.htm#Sexing snakes)

I think there are others but I don't remember where to find them.

Probing is a possibility but it really isn't necessary. There are some other threads on this forum with visual examples.

Thanks Stevo. That was the best visual help I have found. I guess it is still ok for my FEMALE wandering to have the name Dexter? lol.

Good thing my son named the Radix, Zeus lol.

Thanks. Those pics are very helpfull I just bought a 20 gallon tank for Zeus.

Question about the wandering garters, since Dexter is a girl...if I find a male tomorrow at the park can i put them in try to that 20 gl long tank? or will they still try to eat each other?

The could possibly. I wouldn't risk it. Also, babies are very hard to take care of when you have an entire litter.

I don't think gender matters with their cannibalism. I have not seen it personally, but I'd feel awful if it happened on my watch so I play it safe.

I can't tell how big Dexter is, but keeping a mature male and female together is stressful even without the risk of cannibalism. The male snakes... they are much like the male humans in certain ways.

I'm stumped on the gender...so I will just have to defer to more experienced snake owners and agree with their assessment. I have a baby eastern named Zeus! My son named him too!

I will take a picture of both of the snakes so you guys can see the difference in size.

I'm a little late....But I was thinking female for the first and male for the second;)

I also wanted to mention, remember, if you're going to house any snakes together, especially with the new one being potentially a WC, you want to have a quaratine period before putting them together.

Good advice, Emily.
