View Full Version : Is my Parietalis sick? :(

I just checked on Olive, my new female Parietalis, and found a soggy messy pile of undigested mouse bits :/
Is this regurgitation?
Also her tongue is very pale.
When I got her she was very thin and had a bite wound but she has plumped out now and her wound is healing great.
I have kept her separate from Manny as I was advised and been keeping the heat in her tub at a decent temp
She has pooped (I seen her) and is eating very well
What could be the cause of the regurgitation and the pale tongue?

The pale tongue could simply be that she's shedding it off. Snakey's tongue was a slightly less black and red colour before the shed came off on my finger.

I know this is gross... could we see a picture of the "mouse bits"? What does it smell like? You'll know if it's a regurge!

Ar ok, her eyes have just cleared ready to shed.
Just weird because I've never noticed this with Manny although he did get a bit of shed stuck dangling from his tongue for a while ha ha looked silly

I smeared it in between the newspaper when I was looking at it to see what it was, hopefully you can still make sense of it

Make sure you keep that snake seperate. Not trying to scare you but it looks like she may have some internal parasites. Did it look waxy when it was piled up? I got some wild caught snakes from florida one time that passed these same looking stools and i lossed a few before i found out what it was. They all had to be treated with metronidazole (flagyl) because they had an amoeba and panacur does not kill amoebas. Not sure this is what is wrong with your snake but i wanted to warn you because it is a possibility and they are highly contagious. It just don't look like a regurge to me. How long have you had the snake? Is it wild caught?

I have had her for twelve days and got her from a pet shop that breed them themselves
I have her in a big clear under bed storage tub with holes in the lid at the moment because it's easy to keep clean.

Well then it shouldn't be parasites it just looked alot like what i was going through awhile back. There are lots of factors that can cause them not to digest there food all the way. I would just keep her warm and monitor her and maybe try smaller meals for awhile. Keep us posted on how she is doing.

Ok will do, thank you
I have booked her in with the vet anyway to be on the safe side.
It's her feeding day today so will feed her less then I normally do and see if that helps
I will post a picture of what she produces next :P
Cheers for the advice

I just realized that says you have had her for 12 days . You might want to have the vet do a fecal on her while you're there. Because pet shops handle all types of herps so again it could be parasites. Sorry for the confusion i had in my mind that you had her for about 12 months and she was captive bred.

Right...that is exactly what I was going to say...she still could have gotten parasites. Sometimes, though, snakes just regurgitate. I would just keep a close eye on her...and it is good that you are taking her to the vet...good thinking. :) Keep us posted please.

This isn't much of a help on why, but my snake....About 1-1.5 months ago(?) threw up randomly. Just a one time thing, never did it before, hasn't done it again. I wouldn't doubt it could be nothing, but glad you've got him an appointment. Let us know what's going on when you get back!:D

Cee Cee throws up now and again. She has never regurgitated food...but she throws up water and foamy stuff now and again. She also gags and tries to throw up unsuccessfully. I have never figured out why she does this...but she is perfectly healthy otherwise.

Sometimes they do that when they drink to much water at one time or get handled after drinking.

I guess I should maybe specify, he "regurged,"(some fish) rather than just "throwing up."

Ok, fed her one pinkie yesterday and then she shed and then a few hours later I found this:
59945995
Don't know why the third picture is as an attachment separate :/
But yeah, it's mostly what looks like water and just a few bits of white jelly like bits in there.
I scraped them together to take a better picture:
5997
What is this all about?
Then woke up to this:
5998
Why she did this UNDER the newspaper I don't know, just making things awkward for me
I have booked her in at the vets for next week but I am kinda intrigued, gross I know but I like to understand these things and learn for future reference.
What do you guys think?

OH and then this tonight:
5999
Which looks really weird and was smellier then the rest, it looked like there were some little undigested bits in there too.
Also is this not a bit soon after her pinkie just yesterday to have passed poop three times by now? And three times over the last two days?

That looks more normal. Feces and urates. Feeding worms will digest faster and have a higher water content which could aid in cleaning out the digestive tract.

When is your vet appointment? I think she needs a fecal exam at this point. I hope everything goes well. Keep us posted with an update and make sure to be very sanitary until you get this cleared up.

I'm confused...those pics are of poop and urates..not what she regurgitated? If the stuff in the pics came out of her vent...it looks normal...if she regurgitated that stuff...I'd be concerned. If she is still regurgitating...I would def take her to the vet. Good that you have an appointment. Keep us posted.

Hey,
Sorry haven't replied in a while, been very hectic!
I have FINALLY got Olive in with the vets, her appointment is tomorrow morning. They have been really busy, apparently everyone's animals are getting ill lately and unfortunately it's the only one I can get to that sees to reptiles.
There has been bad progress with her though :( there is now blood in her poop :( poor Olive!
Her appointment is at 8.40, that's the soonest they had.
I will post again tomorrow letting you know what the verdict is.
Thank you for checking in Bluesirtalis, makes me feel good to be apart of this forum :)
Fingers crossed for Olive!

Im so sorry to hear that. It looks like she may have had some type of protozoan infection which usually takes a vet to diagnose. Amoebas and some other protozoans can cause waxy looking stools with blood and cause the snake to be dehyrated. Amoebas get in to the small and large intestine and cause enteritis. Make sure you clean this cage with bleach and rinse good and let it sun dry. You may want to clean several times before using again because if it is a protozoan like an amoeba they are highly contagious and make sure to keep an eye on your other snake and monitor it's feces. I'm so sorry for your loss and i hope you have a blessed day.

Thank you everyone for your kinds messages.
She made me so happy and I feel like I have failed her.
There's so many ifs and buts going through my head right now.
I am so upset and angry and at the time felt so helpless and frustrated.
I've taken this really hard, it might take a while but I'll take away from this as much I can.
-Love you Olive, I'm so sorry-
Thanks again guys and I'll be back soon no doubt
-Rest in peace my beautiful girl x x -
