I am interested to see if there are any members in colorado who know the best places to find other species of Garter?

W. Blackneck Garter Snake - Thamnophis c. cyrtopsis
Western Terrestrial Garter Snake - Thamnophis e. vagrans
W. Plains Garter Snake - Thamnophis r. haydenii
Red Sided Garter Snake - Thamnophis s. parietalis

I dont have anyway to keep another snake, but I thought a 'snake hunting outing' would be a fun thing to do. See these other species up close and in the wild.

My friend sees Vagrans in Golden all the time, near Colorado Mills Mall.

T.radix has no sub-species recognized now. Thamnophis r. haydenii is no more;)

T.e. vagrans can be found all over the Denver metro area. I have only found one T. radix and it had been killed by a bird, but it was a little west of Chatfield State Park.

I used to find alot of radix garters in the Greeley area. I have not been down to Greeley for some time now though.

Heh...I used to live In Greeley! Wish I had been into snakes when I lived out there. Btw...I hated Greeley. I loved Boulder! Loved going into the rockies...but Greeley was too conservative for me.

Maybe I'll head up to Greeley in the fall. I've kind of shut it down for the summer because I'm not finding much and it's been so hot. I'm also having trouble finding new places around Denver - we have lots of green space but most parks want you to stay on the trails. My biggest deterrent has been other park visitors, some are really uptight and will call CPW if they see you off trail or flipping logs.

That is kind of silly. Are they worried about you defiling the park or hurting snakes or what?

I mostly only ever find Radix around where I live in Aurora. My neighbor has a pool and they are plentiful in her yard.

Cool thanks everyone for the tips and locations. I may go down to Chatfield today and look for some.
I would love to have a Radix....those are lovely snakes.

I had some old lady call the call the cops on me and my step kids cause we were playing in a river and looking for crawdads. I guess some people have nothing better to do than make trouble for other people who are not doing anything wrong.

I lived in Greeley for 8 years. My family moved away because it was becomming too crowded :P I used to find snakes in several of the parks, and I would find a TON in a little field across from the church my family went to, over by UNC. Also found some out by the community college. Not sure where the best spots would be these days... every time I go back the place is more and more changed :( I miss Colorado, but after living out here in WY I couldn't go back... I like the wide open spaces :D
