I am gonna try feeding Dexter a pinky, probably saturday. I am gonna try scenting it with one of the guppies....
That has been working great with the silversides that he is eating right now. It feels pretty small so I think he will do ok swallowing it.

As soon as my phone uploads pictures to my email I will post them.

I was gonna try giving him one pinky a week and then one fish twice a week. Is that a good feeding schedual for a young snake?
It is kinda funny. I have been hand feeding him at the water bowl, so when he gets hungry he comes to the water bowl and looks up at my flicking his tongue.

Its amazing how quickly they learn, isn't it?

I fed my little eastern and checkered like that and they grew very quickly - perhaps too quickly and too large -I have them both on a diet now.

Try to aim, over the long run, for a higher percentage of fish and worms, lower (one meal a month was suggested.) Of rodents.

oh ok. He is not to fond of the worms. So I don't think I will give him those. I never realized that garters had such personality.

Here he is enjoying a fresh Silverside. and Last night he was hungry again so I tried the little pinky mouse. He seemed to enjoy it.

Yay!
All mine relish rodents once they try them. They beg like crazy when they smell pinks.
problem is I overindulged them and they have become quite fat. I have them on a leaner diet now.

Awesome! I'm glad he is thriving under your care :)

Just out of curiosity, are you tempted to get another garter snake?

Here is a pic of Dex at the water bowl telling me he is hungry. Today he ate 1 1/2 silversides...without me scenting them with guppy. He is so awesome. So of my friends at work think that I am wierd for having a pet snake, they think he is dangerous. :p

I have looked at some of the other member albums and all of you guys have beautiful snakes.
I would love to get another one, a different species, like a red or blue one. But I want to make sure that I am doing everything right.

Do most of the other species of Garter eat fish and such?

Every snake is different in what it likes to eat, just like every snake has a different personality. But, yes other types also eat fish. It's best to keep it varied, though.

This morning he is extra....well....excited about something. He was following my hand on the glass nipping at my fingers. I know he associates my hand with getting yummy fishies, but he was more excited than normal.

He has been eating a lot more than he did. Now we are at almost 2 whole fish.

Vary the diet as best you can.

I got him to eat half a dead night crawler this afternoon. My fridge got a little cold so I had a frozen block of dirt and worms lol.

Maybe I should get him some fresh ones soon.

I think so, but where are we going to get a duck and a hose at this hour?
