breeding question?

Hi, im thinking of starting to breed garters, i have one male, just wondering if i can breed different type of garter of if they gotta be same thanx

You can breed any subspecies of garter together that's in the same genus. For example you could breed an Eastern Garter (Thamnophis Sirtalis sirtalis) with a Red Sided Garter (Thamnophis Sirtalis parietalis). The reason why most people don't do this is because you get a hybrid of the two, unlike when you breed morphs together and can separate them again into normals and whatever the morph is.

Just wanted to clear it up a bit. All garters belong to the same genus; Thamnophis.

Really Chris, I think it better to breed animals within the same species/sub-species. Why mix them up?

northern garter??? the pic you have is of a checkered garter.... Is that the one you want to breed??

cool, love checkered garters. got a pair of females myself..will hopefully be getting a male this summer.

i thought it was a checkered but got told it was a northen so i stuck with that, glad i no now. i took it to be probed last week but they said it was too small (16-18inches) so i am not sure of the sex yet but when i no i will be getting one of the opposite sex.

yea...a lot of pet store people don't know their species real well.... It is big enough to probe...but make sure whoever does it knows what they are doing so they don't injure the snake. If the one guy says it's too small...best to avoid him for probing the snake.... better safe than sorry :eek:

You're in the Midlands aren't you, Chris? There are some good reputable dealers/breeders in your area who could help you. Failing that, ask at your nearest zoo, they could sex it for you, and maybe teach you how to do it yourself next time.

Hi Chris where in notts are you? Im in Notts as well and i know a really good shop in sherwood, on Mansfield Road called Nottingham Reptile Centre, the guy who runs it, Ash, really knows his stuff, he should be able to probe it for you for free. Hes done several of our snakes and always been spot on.

I wanted to know a bit more about the breeding process and I read a study done about the breeding process saying that the pheromones where specie-specific but not subspecie-specific, meaning for example, a Thmanophis sirtalis will mate with any subspecie of Thamnophis sirtalis but not with any Thamnophis "non-sirtalis". Has anyone here observed the same behavior?
I'm asking this because my enclosure is big enough to host at least two couples and I was wondering if it was safe to have two different species in the same enclosure (I've got another enclosure the same size but I might use it for some Scheltopusik, aka Ophisaurus apodus although their lifespan kind of scares me, since I'm already 28 and can't say i've got the heathiest way of life there is :D :D :D )

I know of a succesfull breeding between radix and sirtalis, with some babies as result. So I would not do it, you might get hybrids.

You cant miss it when you get there, the name is in big green lettering and there are snake and spider desighs on the window.
The shop is open from 10am-5pm everyday except Sunday when it closes at 4pm and its closed all day on thursday.
