I know of an individual who travels to Holland and back to Canada on a semi regular basis. Does anyone know how hard it would be to bring in some garter snakes from Holland to Canada if he was to bring them with him?

I heard back from the government and according to them,
"Please be advised that amphibians and reptiles (excluding turtles and tortoises) are no longer regulated under the Health of Animals Regulations (other than Part XII that regulates the transport of all animals). As a result, no Canadian Food Inspection Agency import permit is required, nor a health certificate and no inspection will normally be done at the border. Imports are permitted from any country, for any use, to any destination in Canada."
So seems like it should be pretty easy as long as they are packaged properly. Does anyone know of any good breeders in Holland??

Make sure you also check up on exporting laws in Holland!
It's the same when importing from the States. From our end, all we need to do is show a proof of payment and pay the duties/taxes. However, the export laws in the States are more complicated. They require permits and health inspections to export the animals. Also, the export can only be done at certain ports.

When I was thinking that I'd maybe bring some snakes back from the US to the UK on a future trip the issue wasn't with customs/quarantine, it was more a case of finding an airline that would carry reptiles. I believe Canadian Airlines would have allowed me to carry snakes, but I didn't get far enough to check pricing.
If you go ahead with this there's several good breeders in Holland - with a thread title like this I don't expect it will take long before it catches Sjoerd's attention (and I'm sure the other Dutch breeders as well).

It has caught our eye indeed and we're working on this. Troubles so far are the expenses and required docs at our end.
But, there is a way, we know that.... and we won't give up untill we figured out the best way to do so!
