You are correct. I had pasted another Yellow rat there and forgot to change the header. Sorry, can anyone identify the species for me? It's a first for me.

I'd have to guess a Brown watersnake (Nerodia taxispilota), although it could be a big Banded watersnake (Nerodia fasciata fasciatat). The big head makes me think more N.taxispilota....they get mistaken for Akistrodon a lot because of the big head.
Roy
Thanks Roy. I tend to agree with your first choice after doing some research.
Thanks everyone for the comments.

Funny, I was leaning towards fasciata after doing a bit of research. :D But then again, I wasn't there, didn't see the snake in real life.

That "green phase" yellow rat snake is a nice finding!
Thanks for sharing, Sid.
I was born a raised in NC and yet when I mentioned on another reptile forum a long time back that there were lots of Cottom mouths there I was laughed at and told that there are NO cottom mouths in NC. The first thing any child from NC is taught in the woods are to watch out around large creeks and lakes for them. Especially if you are going swimming. Now I have proof!

Tori,

This is all the snakes in North Carolina, complete with range maps.
