I know this isn't necessarily Garter related, but has anyone heard of a new show called "Killer Karaoke"?
Well one of their ideas of entertainment is dunking people in a tub filled with snakes.
...Snakes that aren't aquatic... And that are in ice water.
Not only that but as you can see in this video (Killer Karaoke - Singing, Snakes, and Steve-O - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKRlEJqI1mg)) they're probably being subjected to kicks and blows from a flailing contestant.

I don't know too much about this whole show but I do know that what they're doing is completely wrong. There's a petition to sign here (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/305/222/497/stop-killer-karaokes-animal-abuse/) if you'd like...

I thought he meant that the story was old, rather than the animal, and it is. As far as the details go, I wanted to check and see if it was just another hoax and found this:

"There is no reason to doubt the authenticity of the photograph itself, although details about where, when and why it was killed and its exact length and weight remain unconfirmed. The crocodile is almost certainly not as large as claimed in the message. Perspective and the relative position of the people posing behind the crocodile probably make it appear significantly larger than it really is"

I think I have to agree with Stefan's estimate of around 4 meters.

It's hard to find hide processors in the u.s. anymore, let alone ones that will handle small, specialty orders at a price anyone but trophy hunters will pay. Horse hide for sporrans is very hard to get. Shepherds I know who want to have the hides of animals slaughtered for meat have fewer and fewer onions.
Nearly everyone today is at least a bit uneasy about having a slaughterhouse or tannery in their town.

"The python hunt referred to in the CNN report is the "2013 Python Challenge (http://www.grindtv.com/outdoor/blog/44924/florida+issues+a+call+to+arms+to+help+remove+invas ive+pythons/)," a month-long hunt that kicks off Jan. 12. The inaugural program, in which hunters armed with firearms and machetes will kill as many pythons as they can, is an attempt to dent the population of the invasive reptiles, which threaten native wildlife.

Burmese pythons, which prey on small mammals, birds, and even small alligators, are prolific breeders and prevalent throughout the Everglades. They're believed to have been introduced to Florida, initially, by pet owners who turned the snakes loose when they outgrew their pens. Burmese pythons can no longer be acquired as pets in Florida, and it's illegal to transport the reptiles across state lines."

I would say that hopefully some of them would see how those snakeskin handbags are produced and not buy them. Unfortunately I don't think that thought enters the mind of most women who carry a snakeskin bag.
And in fairness, it's not just women and handbags, I expect that there are a number of equally vain men wearing snakeskin shoes, belts and jackets.

There was a worse article in The Mail recently:

It was always funny to me that you could import a live snake (with all of the possible ecological impacts), but not the skin of a dead one. Or when your pet snake dies, you can't turn it into a belt.

I bet if we allowed people in Florida to turn the invasive pythons into boots they'd be able to remove a lot more than by holding a "whacking day" style competition.

Then I realized I had met this guy probably ten years ago and visited his serpentarium! From what I remember it was a very nice facility. I just thought it was funny to see someone on that show I recognized.

Well, I've seen Greg McKenzie-Milne (Gregmonsta) on something about reptile shows, and Don Belnap's wandering garters on Animal Planet-Infested, so it was bound to happen to you sooner or later.

Wow indeed. And condolences to the family.

It's so unlikely that a constrictor would escape and travel upstairs and kill one child, let alone two. A large African Rock Python (which is what the BBC is reporting, although earlier reports suggested it was a boa) would be capable, but killing two children doesn't seem likely behaviour, they don't kill for fun, if it did kill one of them you'd expect it to have attempted to swallow him rather than attack the other.
It's possible that the boys woke up with the snake in their room and tried to play with it and both were constricted at the same time because the snake was far to large for them to handle. It's also possible that something more sinister occurred and that the snake is being used to cover up a crime. There's now facts available about the incident yet, but it will be interesting to see how it pans out and the repercussions on exotic pet owners.

I find it odd that in the UK you need to be licensed to keep venomous snakes, crocodiles and various other animals that are dangerous. But anybody could buy an anaconda, reticulated python or afrock without any controls, although until now incidents involving large constrictors are almost unheard of.

I actually just posted something about this on the "Oh so quiet" thread. I agree, my first thought when I read the news article on the incident is that something sounds off. I mean, I have certainly heard of people who own retics having incidents in which the snake did try to constrict...and it took several people to pull the snake off...but that usually happens when an owner is holding a very large snake. I'm not sure why a python would just go into a house and kill two sleeping children. Was the snake starving or something? Were the kids covered in rabbit? It's a little odd...but I guess it could happen. Also, if this guy owns an exotic pet store...why didn't he have this snake secured properly? One funny thing, my son and mother ran up to me as soon as I woke up and told me a snake ate two children...I was like "What???"....it actually swallowed two children? Then, I read the article.

I read a more recent report that's saying the snake was kept in the apartment. It wasn't kept securely, as evidenced by it being out of its housing. Whether that's the only thing that has been confused by the media remains to be seen. Apparently you already need to have a permit for an afrock in the province and the owner didn't have one. The case smells fishy, but time will tell how fishy.

no way it happened like that. a few questions was the boys in the same bed or separate or maybe in the floor being as they was at a friends house? had the kids been in the pet store holding and rabbits or other prey items the snake could pick up on? in 12 years of this guy owning the snake how many times had it got out that we don't know about? and have they looked into any other people as possible suspects? hell someone could have let it out into the vent knowing the kids held other animals know what might happen, only because as many others have said this seems very improbable.

Steve, for some reason I thought it went well with this post. If the snake was not killing them to eat them then the snake had no motive. Hence, unlike humans, "Snakes don't kill for fun".

@ Steve... As Chris mentioned earlier. Snakes don't kill for fun.

But they (pythons) have killed, and do kill, for reasons other than hunger.

While they shouldn't be so quick to condemn the snake, don't be so quick to defend it. It wouldn't be the first time a large python strangulated a person but didn't swallow him/her. We shall see what the autopsy results say. Personally I think it's just flat out stupid to own a snake capable of this and it wouldn't break my heart one bit if private ownership of such an animal was banned globally. Rock pythons specifically, are banned in many places and for good reason. And apparently the law doesn't allow this owner/store to have or sell anything that gets bigger than 3 meters. Had they followed the law those boys would still be alive.

Hey all. Been a while since I've posted. This is all over Canadian news. They've literally aired this story all day long. From what I've gathered, the snake was about 14 feet, and allegedly weighed 100lbs. The kids had spent time with animals that day. I believe they were at a petting zoo, and I remember something about a llama. "Experts" say that the snake escaped from the neighbouring apartment, crawled through a vent, and attacked both children because they smelled like prey. The children were found with bite marks, and autopsies will be done.

I believe this is the first case of a snake killing two people. Quite interesting, as rock pythons have killed and eaten large animals, and even humans through their native range. Very sad that such a thing had happened, and gives us herpetoculturalists a negative appearance.

yea your right but like thamneil said they was at a petting zoo and probably smelled like prey. that snake doesnt know they are kids they just smelled food. and the whole cant understand people that want an animal that could do this, im with ya on that especially if your breaking the law by doing it. then to have it unlawfully and not keep it on lockdown is just beyond STUPID hell that guy had at least some idea the capabilities of the snake.

But what i dont understand is how a snake that size could get into the ventilation in the first place. i mean dont they keep covers over ventilation openings in canada or was there no cover on the vents in the entire building. probably 99% of vent covers are kept secured by screws(at least the ones i have seen) how could a snake even get a cover off from the outside? or even inside the vents would it not make a lot of noise trying to get it off, or am i missing something here?

thamneil
08-06-2013, 11:15 PM
I can't comment on the ventilation, but I can comment on the legality of the python. While that area does have a by-law prohibiting the possession of this species, I believe this animal was grandfathered in. The snake belonged to the owner of a reptile shop, and was being kept legally as far as I know.

I've always heard "but there are plenty of responsible people that own pythons" My response has always been "there's nothing responsible about owning an animal that can eat you or your neighbor's pets and children" and I still stand by it. Nobody but zoos and institutions should be allowed to have a snake like this and they should all be required to have RFID chip if not GPS or remote activated radio transmitters in them. Enough is enough.

Whatever. Doesn't really matter. The snake lived in the same building and got to the kids. Doesn't really matter much how it got there. It obviously wasn't enclosed securely. That's the snake owner's responsibility. How could someone be so stupid. You just don't get complacent knowing full well the snake is capable of killing a person.

One thing that ticks me off is that the guy's petstore had been closed down before for improper conditions (which goes hand in hand with improper housing). They JUST seized over 16 illegal large reptiles including several crocodilians and large tortoises as well as other large snakes. Why was this guy even still in business? There were petitions which have been closed down since the incident to get the store closed for improper housing and inhumane conditions.

I would support a permit program that involved inspection of the enclosure and ID-chipping, but not a ban. My worry is if you ban any animal that when kept or socialized improperly could harm a child, you open a totally new can of worms. I mean, house cats kill more children by smothering them in their sleep than big snakes. Mounties have already had to respond to panicked calls about a neighbor's 4ft. escaped ball python!

If someone could find a story of a properly contained constrictor killing a human then I'd consider supporting a ban. The other high-profile snake attacks (in the US) involve really stupid caging conditions. Like the guy who used a 26lb weight to hold the top on the tank, and the snake got out and killed his young nephew. Or the pregnant woman (police were able to respond and save her and the baby) who let the snake FREE ROAM. Or even the guy who fell into his severely malnourished snake's cage with a near-lethal combination of alcohol and cocaine in his system. Letting people who keep snakes like that cause a ban, IMO, is like letting Michael Vick cause a ban on dogs over 50 pounds.

Plus, with the numbers already in the pet trade, IMO a ban would only create a pretty big black market, not end ownership.

Yeah when the family went R.V. camping in 2011 we went a bit early (late May) and the weather was crap. (Thunder storms hail/rain heavy at times) On the last day we had some sunshine and about 9am while sitting around the camp fire a huge blue concinnus slithered right up into camp to warm up by the fire! The campers next to us were totally freaking out and screaming because snakes were on their site too. I told them they could shoo them our way. They are welcome in my camp any time. :D

We've been going later in the summer since then but by then conditions are dry and hot. Don't see a single snake anywhere around there in those conditions.:(
