I'll soon have some little'uns coming in the mail and I'm wondering if I should give them some carefresh substrate or just keep it simple and go with newspaper. What have others done?

Newspaper or white paper towel will allow you to monitor fecal deposits and let you see them more often which might reduce the amount of time to settle in. In the care fresh you will have to go looking for them.
Just my opinion.

Thanks, Steve. My kingsnake has to move out of the tank first, so I'll send the substrate with her since I just changed it last week.
