Does anyone know if meat like beef, pork, chicken ect can be fed to garters?

My babies LOVE their chicken!! It's probably their favourite meal. They'll attack it like it's alive.

I have fed turkey heart and liver on occasion and chicken leg meat also. Simply as a treat.

When you guys feed meat...are you feeding it raw? If I wanted to try it as a treat...what kind of meat specifically would you recommend?

I only feed raw.

I usually use the thigh meat and I try to get grain-fed organic. My snakes probably get it a little more often than as a "treat", but I don't feed pinkies and I wanted them to have more variety.

I've heard of people using Chicken Thigh to get non-feeders going again but don't feed it myself currently.

Perhaps I will pick up some organic chicken from my local natural food store at some point and try it just for a treat. I don't know though...it seems like it would be difficult to digest...wouldn't want to cause impaction.

If my memory serves me I think chicken is low in vitamin A so a supplement might be required if you use it for more then a treat.

I wouldn't say that it's a staple either...maybe somewhere in between. I'd say they get chicken anywhere from once a week to once every three weeks. They mainly get silversides and fish filet, with the occasional canned snail.

Are you supplementing?

No - Should I be?

Not sure how much calcium they are getting from the silversides, might be a good idea every once in awhile.
I certainly don't think it can hurt.

I give chicken hearts every once in a while. I also feed egg. Mostly egg white with a little tiny bit of yolk to make it really pale yellow. A lot of my snakes enjoy salmon omlets every once in a while ;)

Sounds good, I will pick up some supplements next time I'm at the pet store. Do you think I should do just calcium?

I always forget that they can also eat egg! I tried it when I first got them and both took cooked egg white.

Cheap stuff can contain unwanted chemicals, growth hormones, and other things. Best to stay with as natural a product as possible.
Keep in mind a garter;s size. It doesn't take much of these chemicals to affect them.
