I think your best bet is guppies. I'm not a very good fish keeper but sure wish I had a tank full of guppies.
Best of luck.

I think once you have a tank established and have the snakes to keep the numbers down it would be worth it.
A tank full of guppies during baby time would be wonderful.

Fons(Thamnophis) mentions that he sometimes feeds these to his snakes on his website.Buy Frozen Dillies | Frozen Aquarium Foods | Fish Food | Northampton Reptile Centre (http://www.reptilecentre.com/peregrine-blister-pack-dillies-100g_p22267580.htm)

I thought about doing this. But then I thought it would be a pain in the *** to pre-kill them and I don't really want to feed live if I can avoid it just for ethical reasons.

It would also be more animals to take care of. Yes, they may be there for food, but they would need to be taken care of until they meet their inevitable fate...Feeding, changing water, etc....

Having an aquarium, and being in the process of setting up a larger tank now, I think it would be more trouble than it's worth to run an aquarium just for feeding garters. You could certainly breed enough guppies to keep pace with a single garter.... given a large enough tank. The other consideration is that to breed in any real quantity you'd need a spawning tank, and a tank for the fry too - the adults are all too happy to eat the small fry given the chance.

Gups are easy to keep and breed but cleaning tanks and whatnot is time consuming. Part of the reason I switched to snakes was to get more satisfaction for my efforts :)

I don't feel like it'd be worthwhile just as a food source. Something like a worm bin would probably be much easier. I've bred fancy guppies and fed the "rejects" to my pets. IMO guppies are a blast to keep and breed in their own right. :)
