Today, I removed Cherryontop from the enclosure Nova was in. He was in there earning his keep as my high red radix male breeder.
Once back in the male paddock I can see he has been in with the girls a little to long. He is being courted by a few of the other males.
I think I will take him out and give him a soapy wash-off. Hopefully that will let him smell like a male again.

That's hysterical...although I am sure it is not at all funny to the poor fellow! Didn't someone post an article on here a little while back that discussed this very thing? How males scented with female phermones would attract other males? I remember thinking how interesting that is...it's pretty cool when you think about it...although again...not for the male being courted! :D

Is it Nova, as in CasaNova? :)
I wonder whether this pheromone transfer is evolved... There would be some advantage as a male to distract other males after sowing your wild oats. If the other males are chasing you they aren't chasing the female you've just mated with. I can't remember, do radix females have a sperm plug?

I've never seen one in a radix.

It looks like the boys know he's a boy again.
All is good once again in the male radix paddock.

Sorry for not replying sooner.
I use some liquid soap and water to wash off and scents he may have picked up.
I've read in a couple of articles that is what they use when doing in-field studies.
