A ribbon is a garter, Thamnophis.;) Yes, they can be housed together. Same sex and size is preferred.
T.e.vagrans (Wandering Garter Snake) are the exception to that rule as they are reports of cannibalism.

Just remember that anything wild caught should be properly quarantined first to lessen the risk of passing along pathogens (as you should with any new acquisitions regardless of where they have come from).
While very unlikely in most cases, there's a risk of predation so you need to be aware and accept that risk. I personally find that mine thrive in groups, they seem more calm & curious and eat like champs. Most seem to get the same results but if you dig deep enough you can probably find accounts of cannibalism in every species.

I keep most of our garters together. We have 3 tanks and rotate them in together every once in a while. We have Pugets, NW, and a checkered. We usually keep the checkered in the tank with the red heat light as she is more active in that tank. They seem to love being together. I also try to keep my problem shedders together, makes it easier to keep an eye on them. We are fortunate in the fact that all our snakes get along with one another. Our 3rd tank is primarily used as quarantine or careful watch and we keep only one snake in that one. Shelby is in that one now as he is new.

I have a 20 gal. long, a 10 gal and the quarantine tank is a 5 gal. Nothing huge at the moment. My fiance is going to build some big tanks as soon as we get caught up with the bills. I think they will probably end being somewhere close to 40 gal longs. I want two so we can separate the boys and girls. We'll keep the other tanks for the albinos, quarantine, breeding, birthing, and babies. That's the plan. I hope to have them set up by Sept.
