I managed to get the rest of the money together early to get my first garter snake. I will have him in exactly 16 hours and i really cant wait. I got a substrate called repti-terf which looks like its just compressed wood pellets. It absorbs rediculously quickly. My son tested it for me by spilling a cup of juice in the tank while i was setting it up

I don't know the substrate, but it's always a thrill to expect some snakes! Don't forget to post some pic's if you have them ;) I'll be looking forward to them.

so i got my first garter snake today and WOW he's quick. opened the tub he was in and he dived out and nearly got away before i had chance to see him.
he is really well tempered and doesn't mind me holding him. he had a nice poo on my hand so he's already handing out presents.

sorry the pic is bad

Congratulations! :)

That's garter snakes for you. Everything else seems to be stuck in slow motion by comparison. ;) Then again, I've never seen a Coluber, Psammophis or much else "in action", so what would I know. :D

Congrats, it's a really fun species to have, you'll enjoy it. But a slow garter is more of a contradiction in terms, you'll find out :D.

thanks everyone. he really is a charmer. he's still settling in but he doesn't seem to mind me picking him up. in fact when i handle him is the only time he stays still. I can't wait for him to get bigger but at the same time i love the fact that hes dinky (which is why i named him "Dinky")
