Awesome! Your girl is on my wish list as well. So my guess is male and female purchased from different locations, do I smell babies in your future? Welcome to garters and the forum.

Happy times.
Garter are different then other snakes as I'm sure you are aware of. In any event here's a link to the care sheet.

Looks like the female is in blue. They are just so, so cute!

ANyway...I think I introduced myself a long time ago, but never posted much since I didn't have any garters : )
In fact, when i joined, i looked back through my posts and i only had 11 snakes...lol
It's 16 with the addition of these two, now!

As for breeding, with garters it is a strong possibility, and in case i did i wanted to, i tried to get different lines, and something kind of interesting. I have two young dumeril's boas from different lines i plan to breed in a few years, I may get another kenyan flame sand boa to go with my girl (i have a regular male, as well but no plans to breed those two to each other)...and I may get a female hognose to go with one of my two males, but those are the only ones i'd be interested in breeding some day.
I have a bolivian boa, a jungle/coastal carpet python, a corn snake, and 5 ball pythons as well.

Anyway, you'll be seeing a lot of me now!! : ) : ) : )

As a second thought....after looking around a bit, I realize that very soon I'd like to separate these two so there is no accidental breeding.
That means.....I will just HAVE to get another female, to stay with my anery, and keep her company *nods* and would another male go well with my little boy here??? Surely they will do better two males, then two females housed, correct? : )

Seriously though...would two males live together?
How about separate species? For instance, my red sided female anery with....a puget sound, or a florida blue?
I plan to eventually get at least the pugets, but just wondering if the different species of females (and or males) would live together.

I'm going to guess it's not a good idea for different species... even if they're the same size...but maybe?

You can house different species together. You'll want to make sure that if you don't want breeding you keep same sex together. As far as species, people say you'll want to make sure they are about the same size and if you plan on having them permanently together that they will eventually end up the same size. I have to admit though, I am a bit of a hypocrite on this topic. We house our pugets and our NW together. They are different sizes as adults. My thought in this is they tend to share the same habitats. We often find Pugets and NW just feet from one another when we go out snake watching.

I know, right Steve? LOL totally spoiled already. And fat! But I was really happy to see them eat! Girl has eaten sliversides, and boy has eaten trout! I don't know if i wrote that and It's easier to type it again than check to see if I did *lol*

katach...that's what I was wondering. And was planning same sexes together...just wondering, wondering at this point. Gathering info, etc : )

Thank you!

I think it's nice to see a couple of different species in the same viv, especially if it's a home that has plenty of stuff to interact with and a couple of hides on each side.
Our baby snake (although they are growing quick) viv has a checkered, albino checkered, and two western blacknecks. Next month when the blacknecks hit a year old the male will be moving in on his own, but the girls will all stay together. They don't show any signs of stress being together, and the blacknecks have actually calmed down a lot and are eating better since they joined the checkered girls. As the checkereds get bigger we may decide to take the blackneck girl out and on her own, that's a bridge we'll cross if we need to.

Awesome! Does anyone else house garters together...and if so, which species? I'd like the widest range of responses...I figure majority rules *lol*
Sorry if it seems like an old question to all you old timers ; )
BTW I'm looking for name suggestions for these little chaps!

I keep my northwesterns all together, but only same sex, or babies. I kept my concinnus with my northwesterns, also same sex. I had to rearrange some of my snakes, because a few got restles and refused to eat until one of them was taken out.

Maybe I'll start a new thread for photos after this : )

Here you can see a FAT female garter after a meal. The little male is hanging out below her. They love to lay all over each other. I am going to hate splitting them up soon. I need more garters to go with them! Girls in one tank, boys in the other : )

They still don't have names...

Hi all! It's been a while. Thought i'd post an update on my babies. I think there is another post around here about how i got two wandering garters, as well. But for now here are a few fat snake photos! (i think they are fat, LOL) not unhealthy, but i did lengthen the time in between feedings for these guys. Not sure when these guys will max out on size. Probably already have? I haven't tried burmation or breeding or anything. They are all unrelated, so the red sideds and the wanderings i did plan to breed some day. Cream, the anery red sided is the largest by far, however her mate Berry is the smallest. I worry for his safety because she is a pig! LOL
What do you guys think?
